They are not spreading a lie.

They are reporting that a woman accused Gaetz during testimony to the House Ethics Committee.

Unless that testimony never happened, what they are reporting is not a lie.

Having known people from Destin, FL (his district) for many years there's more than enough smoke to make some of these 'fires' seem very plausible. The man might do the job at DOJ just fine, but there's no need to make him a saint by any stretch.

Oh No! A woman had sex when she was 17. Let's spend $millions and ruin lives about something that didn't hurt anybody and happened how many years ago/

The alleged incident happened in 2019, when Gaetz would have been 37 (and the girl, 17).

The feds were investigating it because the girl was allegedly paid to have sex with Gaetz, which would make it sex trafficking. Without the payment aspect, it would be a state offense only (statutory rape, the age of consent in Florida being 18, and the age proximity exception not applying to Gaetz). The feds decided not to pursue it because the girl is now doing porn, and Gaetz's buddy (the other key witness) has a bunch of other criminal charges that render his credibility as a witness near zero. But, the bigger problem for Gaetz may be his habit of bragging about his sexual conquests once he got to Congress. He's just managed to turn off almost everyone, including folks whose politics are right in line with his.
