Why the time gap between election and inauguration?

The new President gets elected in early Nov. Why id there a 2.5 month gap for the new President to take office? In the meantime the outgoing President is either a lame duck whom no one listens to, or at worst, can cause a lot of damage in areas like foreign affairs and military.

This may have made sense in the 1800s because of delays of the time, but not now.

Corporations don't let employees who have resigned to stick around. Why is the President sticking around for so long?

If I remember correctly, Inauguration Day used to be in March. It gave time for the incoming President to get their affairs in order, get moved, etc, so they could hit the ground running once sworn in.

Unfortunately, there's no political will to change the 20th Amendment. It was set for March back in 1787 but moved to January in 1932, probably for the reasons you mentioned.

The great grandparent owned and lived in the house. The President is a guest in the WH and should be all packed up come election time.

2.5 months is ridiculous. Vivek and Elon need to look into this!

Thanks for the info. I can understand 2-3 weeks. Dec 1 should be the date of inauguration.

Think of it more like a retirement. It would be beneficial to keep the old employee around and have a smooth transition.

I've got no problem with the delay.

Gives the incoming President time to assemble his staff.

Unfortunately, it also gives the outgoing admin time to delete incriminating files, etc. But they were going to do that anyway.

It would make more sense for the start of the presidential term to align with the start of the new Congress.

The vote held in November by the people is to elect the electors.

Then electors in each state meet on or by December 17th to determine who they are voting for President and Vice President and transmit those votes to the archivist and President of the Senate.

On January 6th, those votes are published to Congress and certified.

Two weeks later, the President is sworn in.

The real election hasn't even taken place yet.

Good point. And then they take off for weeks at Christmas. Later in January seems to be the timing that works.

That darn pesky Constitution. I am sure OP wanted Brandon installed as President in Nov 2020 as well unfortunately I couldn't find that tread he started.

This is more like one company taking over another one as opposed to a resigning employee or group of employees. Some people from the company being acquired often do stay around for transition and sometimes for as long as 6 mos . I don't think a 2.5 month transition is out of line.

Having said that, the damage the outgoing admin may be able to do in the 2.5 mos is a fair concern and should be watched closely.

I thought they switched it to January 20th because there was a president in the same mental shape as Biden and when January 1st came around they couldn't find him? when they eventually found him he was wondering around lost in the forest with **** in his pants (poop rash) and it took a couple weeks to get him ready to pass the torch?

I'd argue to say right now the lame duck is working is Trump's favor. He is aggressivly working now and I'm confident he will continue to do so through January 20th to build his team and his plan. But these 2.5 months won't go against his 4 years in office (and especially his 2 years with house and senate).

This will all depend though on if Biden does anything the next 2.5 months to hamstring Trump or get a bunch of judges approved. I'm hoping during the meeting yesterday Trump offered Biden something small in return for just being a 100% lame duck and not appointing any more judges or executive orders. I'm hoping Biden is pissed at his party and won't do anything to help them now.

Depends. If you are a senior leader and resign, you are out. They don't want you talking to customers or making strategic plans when you are headed out.

2.5 months is too much. 2-3 weeks is reasonable.

Because the Constitution was written at a time without planes, trains, and automobiles, and a President-Elect might need a couple of months to travel to Washington.
