Changing administrations is an enormous undertaking. Especially if the change is between opposition parties.

Its complicated.

If Trump actually reforms and trims the federal fat it could get less complicated I suppose.

The new President gets elected in early Nov. Why id there a 2.5 month gap for the new President to take office? In the meantime the outgoing President is either a lame duck whom no one listens to, or at worst, can cause a lot of damage in areas like foreign affairs and military.

This may have made sense in the 1800s because of delays of the time, but not now.

Corporations don't let employees who have resigned to stick around. Why is the President sticking around for so long?
The process takes time. There are several steps along the way that must be gone through.

For example, the county canvassing must be done before submitting the votes to the state. I don't know about other states, but in Texas there is a minimum of 3 days after the election and a maximum of 10 or 14 days after the election depending on the election.

The state notifies the electors named by the winning party and they have a given date to meet.

They then send the electoral vote of each state to Washington where the Senate and House meet to count the votes. Then finally the inauguration.

Demanding "DO IT NOW" is the hallmark of the Karen. Don't be a Karen.

Unfortunately, there's no political will to change the 20th Amendment. It was set for March back in 1787 but moved to January in 1932, probably for the reasons you mentioned.

Thanks for the info. I can understand 2-3 weeks. Dec 1 should be the date of inauguration.
It typically takes two or three weeks to canvass the votes.

Unless fired a 2-week notice is pretty standard in corporate America.

This time is essentially the same thing.
I saw one case in which an employee gave one year's notice. And when the year was up, the company tried to get him to stay longer.

Because the Constitution was written at a time without planes, trains, and automobiles, and a President-Elect might need a couple of months to travel to Washington.

The wise Latina would agree with you that we need to throw out the parts of the Constitution that you don't think fit with modern times.

You also need the new Congress to be in place and they don't take office until January 3rd. Then you have to have time for them to very the cabinet choices so that on January 20th or so they can vote on them.

IT'S IN THE CONSTITUTION !!!

Trump isn't president yet. He's not even president-elect. No electoral votes have been casted and counted.

3 U.S. Code, Chapter 1, 7 - Meeting and vote of electors

"The electors of President and Vice President of each State shall meet and give their votes on the first Tuesday after the second Wednesday in December next following their appointment at such place in each State in accordance with the laws of the State enacted prior to election day."

Then the 12th Amendment kicks in.

"The Electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President, and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate;the President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted;- […]."

This can't happen until the Senate and House report for duty on January 3 in accordance with Section 1 of the 20th Amendment.

The votes will be counted January 6, 2025. The President of the Senate (Kamala Harris), the Archivist of the United States, and other designated Federal and State officials must have the electoral votes in hand at this time.

This occurs two weeks before the inauguration, which take place in accordance with Section 1 of the 20th Amendment. .

They'll still be counting votes for the Pa Senator.
