Trump played this badly. Since he clearly was backing Scott but didn't come out publicly to do so it set it up for Thune. Why? Without Trump's endorsement then it was easy to vote against Scott without penalty and it also means that those who DID vote for Scott can expect retribution from Thune. So everyone that has been railing against Ted Cruz for working behind the scenes to get Scott elected and then publicly endorsing him should learn a lesson on how the politics of the Senate works.

Of course Trump will "stay above the fray" but this was his first big mistake since the election and it's going to have consequences. Thune is terrible and this just made it much harder to oppose him.

Can we blame this BS on McConnell? This reeks of him undermining Trump while his sorry, RINO ass is on the way out.

Next goal: get Cornyn the hell out of there in '26. I cannot vote for that one again.

Cornyn needs his RINO ass primaried for sure. Will not vote for him in 2026.

The Trump electoral and popular vote win was a mandate on getting away from how the politics currently works.

The secret vote and Thune winning is exactly what is wrong with politics and the GOP that the Trump vote was trying to get away from.

Their constituents elect them, just like we keep electing Cornyn. It's time for the electorate to get off its ass and vote people out.

The Senate gets to elect their own leaders. I guess we'll find out how it goes. Whoever the majority leader ends up being, I'm willing to give him a chance.

Thune is no fan of President Trump.

No disagreement here but the way you do that is by blowing it up. Trump could have come out and endorsed Scott. He could have come out and said that the vote needs to be public. He could have made his intentions known in a dozen other ways. He didn't. He sat back and tried a backchannel campaign that gave the Swamp enough room to get their guy. Trump has more power and influence right now than he will ever have, this was worth using some of it but he chose not to. People in DC will take notice.

It will be fine but this was poorly played by Trump. I hope he learns from it.

I agree, but why should they? WE don't do anything about it. For too long it's been acceptable to just be opposing to the other side.

Number one issue. No reason to endorse recess appointments. That's not necessary at all.

Seems some wishful thinking here. I think Trump just let the senate handle their business. I'm sure he made it quietly known what he would like to happen, but there is no point making his relationship with Cornyn/Thune any worse than it would already be by actively campaigning against them. Saying this is somehow Trump's mistake when he has no real control over the Senate's process is a bit off the mark.

Presidents have never been involved in deciding who should be Senate Majority/Minority Leader. That's always been the Senate's business. I think Trump was smart to stay out of it and avoid drawing the ire of Senators that he needs a working relationship with.

Oh, so you don't think Trump wanted Scott then? All of the campaign by his surrogates for the last few days was just organic. K.

Trump is doing a great job overall since the election, far better than I could have hoped. That said you don't learn from things if you don't see the mistakes along with the victories.

Heck of a strawman you built there!

I think Trump probably would prefer Scott. But when is he ever been shy about getting his opinion? If it was a big deal to him, he would've said something!

You were bending over backwards to find fault with Trump, and the votes aren't even done being counted! (Looking at you California)

The Senate RINOs are still living in the past, believing they are statesmen, working with Dem statesmen who all support and defend the Constitution. They do not understand that the Dems in the Senate are mostly communists that seek one party control.

The Dems are ruthless. It is time to act likewise.
