I am not a helicopter or plane pilot.
I do have a question though.
It appears there is no safe landing site where this pilot was flying in at a very low level. Wouldn't a pilot in this situation have flown over this area at a much higher altitude to ensure a safe landing zone?

Seems this pilot may be incompetent at best.

The Blue Ridge Parkway in VA will reportedly be re-opening in phases as damage there was much more minimal. Obviously the NC section will be closed for some time, with many washout and mudslides.

Surprisingly Tail of the Dragon seems to be open, if you can get to it.

This happened periodically like twenty years ago. They traced several incidents back to a clueless dispatcher at one shipping company. I figured truckers pretty much knew to avoid it by this point, but these are desperate times I guess.

For you and jte, there is no other explanation. We could've been in there after day 1. If their snake eaters are currently deployed the EMAC process could have been streamlined to light speed. This is willful negligence.

This guy who has been posting a lot of content also flies a paramotor. He flew over Lake Lure/Chimney Rock and filmed this. The most interesting part is where you can see the mudslide paths down the side of the mountains.

FEMA is indeed trying to co-opt aid coming into the area. We had several people at church today who had first-person accounts of being stopped by FEMA and being asked to unlock their trailers so they could take their materials meant for the people of the region. The individuals declined, and continued in.

Despicable.

Our neighbor is a large animal vet at UT/Knoxville. She is being deployed to the Black Rock area by FEMA. She's been ready to go but FEMA is dragging their feet.

Interesting, I have heard rumors of this from multiple people. The mountains in Appalachia are the absolute last place you should ever try something like this. It's armed to the teeth and the people there do not take well to outsiders hurting them. Combine that with the sheer volume of veterans in the area who are helping out and it becomes an extremely hostile area for gangs like this.
