I think for the first time in US history, the government is literally cash strapped and broke. They have literally given so much to illegals, Ukraine, Israel, etc, and robbed FEMA with no thought to what would happen if there is a huge natural disaster. The worst case scenario has happened and now they have no clue how to pay for this, nor handle this...
They are probably just going to slow play it and leave Trump with a huge huge fricking mess and then point the finger and say look what a disaster of a President Trump is, blah blah blah..They don't want to cut off all the aid to their special illegals that will vote for them in the future, and it would be a huge disaster if they did and all these criminal illegals hit the streets doing 3rd world type crap to survive since the government isn't paying the bills anymore.

Technically, there is validity here in what you are saying. We don't have any money unless we print it or run our usual accounting magic with the Fed and the banks. There is nothing there. It's all vapor and that game is about up.
If we don't re-purpose what FEMA's designed for after this (we won't), then we deserve to fail as a country (we will).
Everything we are seeing from private citizens with Helene is as much proof as we will ever see that our government is no longer legitimate and does not have our interests at heart. Our people will get everyone through this; not the government. And the latter is ok with that so they can focus on coddling illegals and foreign enemies.

In Concord it was fixed wing, but the same holds true for helos. We flew our own planes. Most were from out of state, some close and others not so close. I talked to people from as far as Maine and Dallas, and I spent 6-7 hours in the air each way to get there. The helicopters working out of other places like Hickory were flown in as well. It's all people who own their own aircraft. I suppose there could have been rentals, but I didn't talk to anyone like that.

I wait daily for customers or anyone to reach out for hurricane relief and for loads to heat up going to affected areas. We're still just waiting. There's nothing. I've been doing this since 2009 and there have been countless disaster type situations. This didn't happen then. It's very strange.

Taking off the tinfoil, is this simply because you can't physically truck anything in or get close enough for proper distribution. All of the roads and bridges are out.
This has primarily been a rescue operation dependent on airdrop first mile and middle mile with final mile serviced by pack animals, ATVs, and 4WD.

If this were a foreign country we probably would have deployed military assets to build temp bridges to remove the logistical issues to get hauls into at least Asheville for distribution within days.

The guy also searched from Chicago and Tennessee. We were sending trucks to Asheville from the Charlotte area, but they were all being done gratis. Fedex, Amazon, local moving companies, etc. You can't really get much past Gatlinburg from the west side.

This year, on the one year anniversary of the flood, members from the organization attended our worship services with us then gave a presentation and annual report about their work and efforts. They also provided relief efforts 3 years go in the community where I went to high school in middle Tennessee when it suffered freak, 500 or 1,000 year (can't remember) rain event and flash flood that killed 21 people (Google the Waverly flood if you want to know more).
I 100% support and trust this group.
- My local congregation is working with another local congregation to collect items through this Wednesday night. Several men will then deliver a livestock trailer load (or multiple trailers) to Newport, TN on Thursday.
Items being collected include:
bleach, cleaning supplies, gloves for cleaning
snack crackers, individual snacks
baby wipes, diapers, formula, diaper ointment, bottles, sippy cups, baby food (no toys or clothes).
monetary donations may be made via check to the Newport church of Christ.

Genuine question...what do they do with a town like that? I am assuming even the buildings that remain are complete losses bc they are structurally compromised. Do you just raze the entire town? There's no coming back from that right? So sad either way.Ramdiesel said:

There were a lot of mom-and-pop type businesses along the road that were hurt pretty bad and may not recover. Someone else will undoubtedly come along and buy the land to build a new tourist trap. I suspect some of the land will be condemned as it just isn't practical to rebuild on. That's probably where the "eminent domain" stories started.
As far as rebuilding it will be a very long and slow process. Major highways first then town centers then moving outward. If new utilities need to be dropped in the cost will balloon.
The reality is many homes will simply be abandoned because they have no access. Counties will see their tax base vanish which will put them entirely dependent on Federal assistance. Property values will also tank and no bank will offer loans on property without access or utilities. So now homeowners who survived Wil see their asset hit rock bottom price.
Now add years to the timetable IF those will be rebuilt.
In the end it will come down to who, State or Fed, will foot the bill.

For those who have flood insurance, the insurance companies will cover the cost of rebuilding. Unfortunately, I doubt many have flood insurance. It's not expensive if you don't live in a (100 yr) flood plain, but it does cost. As most of these buildings are not in a flood plain, most people figure it won't happen to them, so they don't get it.
For those without flood insurance, that's what FEMA is for. They will come through and write low-interest SBA loans for those affected so they can rebuild. Since this is a flood, FEMA may require the owner to get Flood Insurance (but I am not positive on this). I am pretty sure that will be a condition for the loan.
Now, those who were in a flood plain, FEMA will not approve your loan if you are going to rebuild in the same place (there are a few exceptions). For those, they will offer to buy-out the property which should allow owner to buy an equivalent piece of land and qualify for a SBA loan for a new building.
For businesses, I believe the process is close to the same. A business is much more likely to carry flood insurance, but for small Mom & Pops, my guess is it would be similar.
The lesson is, if you own property, buy flood insurance for it.
I think FEMA will approve a loan in the 100yr, however, you have to bring your home to current code and that requires lifting your home out (above) of the floodplain by a certain height.

This is what happened after Harvey-any rebuilt home is 4 feet higher than it was before. My parents home was one of the tallest on the block. Survived Harvey and is now one of the shortest. The new homes all look like monoliths but will withstand the next cat 4 probably.
