Got a story for you!

I have A young employee hired 3 or 4 years ago that had a very similar story. I noticed he was pretty vague if you asked about his youth or family. Spent a day with him on field visits and by the end of the day he confessed his life story to me. Father shot himself, mother(nurse)) started abusing drugs and he wound up being raised by grandparents that had a few loose screws as well. Luckily I had read the book and the movie came out right before this. I'll always remember has ashamed he was admitting this to me.
The kid had worked his way from a very bad public school to get a mechanical engineering degree from auburn

I told him that his upbringing was far from being something to be ashamed of he should be very proud of the fact he navigated his way thru it. Gave him orders to watch that movie that night and buy the book! Jd had just announced running for senate and I told him he had a very good chance of being president one day!

Anyway, I would gladly pay a million dollars to see the look on his face the next day. He got choked up and told me he called his sister at 11 the night before to tell her to watch it that night!

I don't know if JD will be very good at this politician thing but his story will change people's lives if they will open their ears to hear it. He has a very inspirational story to tell how to rise above all this mess our society has become fueled by government spending.

Niece was in the movie and my cousin said he knows Vance, legit and very smart guy. My cousin is a conservative which makes me trust his opinion more than some random person

I thought it was an ok book. The highlight was his grandmother - she was a foul-mouthed badass,

Yeah? Maybe some of us, but I'm not from poor Appalachia and my parents weren't degenerate drug addicts.
Well…you sounded taller on radio.

I like what he said at the convention. "She loved the lord and the F word"

THAT is a tribute!!!

I hope someone thinks of me that way one day!

Looking at that reading list, I recommend Conflict of Visions by Sowell. Less salacious, similar message.

After watching the debate, watched the movie. If any of those undecideds or on the fence knew his story, he'd win them over. Disgusting those on the left and in the media have tried to label him as "weird"

The movie is really a biographical snapshot of his family growing up. The book deals with a broader story of blue collar whites moving from Appalachia to the industrial Midwest and being hampered by their self limiting "hillbilly" culture (substance abuse, violence as a default in conflict resolution, defeatist thinking). The book then uses his family as an example of that larger story. I liked the book quite a bit because the story also mirrors that of one wing of my family that came from the Ozarks a generation earlier to St. Louis back when industry was booming there.

I know I'm in the minority but I just can't view any politician, including those on our side and especially at the national level, as having much in common with me. I have nothing against him in particular at all from what I know but I have a hard time relating to looking at any of them as anything other than tools. Go to work for the policies I sent you there for, and otherwise leave me alone. That's it. I don't care about their "story" or family any more than I care about my mailman's. I'm so jaded about them all.

He was enlisted in the Marines straight out of high school, then went to Ohio State undergrad using money he got from his time in the military. Later, he was smart enough to get accepted to Yale law school. What's more American than working your way up the ladder using brains and hard work to overcome a poor upbringing?

The only people who don't like stories of self-made individuals are leftists, because they simply refuse to believe you can get anywhere in life without cheating or "privilege" or government handouts.

They loved him after his book came out before he endorsed Trump. The same way they loved Trump in the past.

There's nothing sad about it. I don't need or want a leader of any kind. I don't "look up to" any of those goobers. I'm good with my friends' and family's stories.
