As much as I love the innovation and creativity in this operation, I'm afraid of terrorists copying the strategy.

They obviously can't intercept large-scale commercial shipments or set up their own front company the way a state actor can. However, they could randomly sell used iPhones on eBay with similar kaboom hacks. That would insert them into the general population and create the terror and fear they desire.
This would give you very little bang for your buck (pun intended). If you just want to blow up random strangers, you don't need this level of sophistication and would do much more damage with a garden variety truck bomb, etc.
Its not about blowing up random strangers. It's about disruption and chaos. Killing an infidel is a bonus.

A dozen iphones blowing up across the country with a terrorist org claiming credit would cause so much chaos (especially with a little lie that there are another 10,000 out there...). The business losses could easily be in the billions just due to interruptions, lost productivity, etc. Imagine being afraid of your phone ringing. A car bomb would not cause the same kind of discord.

That is what is the big deal about these pagers. They hurt them yes, but this is a huge interruption to their entire organization. They have slowed them down more than just the personnel lost. They now have to rethink everything.
Moreover, the pager/walkie-talkie sabotage was so widespread and successful that anyone who escaped without any injuries will automatically be suspected of working with the Israelis. Double bonus!

Muslims made a mistake messing with Jews.

You slap a Jew once, he will slap you 10000 times.
After 2 slaps the Muslim will start squealing like a baby flashing his victim card.

I'm old enough to remember when some jerkoff was putting poison in Tylenol tablets.

Thank him for the 12 layers of plastic you now have to cut through to get a pill

Point is that Tylenol adapted and survived

That was a lady trying to use one of Trumps covid speeches to kill her husband. Trump was right and the lady was trying to kill her husband.

What I remember about that is one lady initially bought a tainted bottle and died. Family gathered at her house and were not feeling well. Oh, here's a bottle of Tylenol. Several more family members died.

Also the reason that OTC meds are often hard to swallow horse tablets instead of the much easier to swallow capsules. Capsules made it too easy to replace the med (eg - Tylenol) with some poison like the cyanide that he used, but tablets not so much.

Some crazy fellow filled Tylenol containers with cyanide and put them back on shelves. People including kids took it and many died. I didn't know what you said, that is doubly tragic.

I remember that the Ags BB team was in a post-season tournament and had just lost. Coach Metcalf was asked about the loss and he said he was gonna take a couple Tylenol and sleep it off.

It was terrible for several years with copy cats. I remember my mom throwing things away if they looked wrong (more likely she was just being overly cautious). It was a sad period. Just shows nuts have always been out there. Social media just connects them a million times easier with other nuts.

People still use pagers???

Hezbollah figured out that Israel was able to use the GPS in Hezbollah cell phones to determine their locations. So to prevent this, Hezbollah leaders decided to distribute pagers to their entire organization so they could communicate with them without fear of giving away their locations (pagers do not have GPS).

Israel just pulled off one of the greatest covert operations of all time, simultaneously killing potentially dozens, blinding potentially hundreds, and wounding/maiming/disabling potentially thousands of Hezbollah's upper echelon, leaving them in complete disarray.

But some on the internet say it's a failure because they should have rigged their beepers with detectable levels of explosives.

Dailywire is reporting Israel intended to detonate them in the event/on the event of a full on war with hezbollah; however 2 of hezbollahs members discovered tampering with the devices, so Israel had to detonate them ASAP.

https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-details-emerge-on-how-israel-struck-4000-hezbollah-terrorists-in-mass-pager-bombing?topStoryPosition=1

---- The pagers were imported months ago from a Taiwan, but were only recently given to the Hezbollah terrorists, reports said. A small amount of explosive material had been placed in each device before it ever reached Lebanon.

Israel's original plan was to detonate the pagers in the event that it entered a full blown war with Hezbollah so that it would have a clear advantage at the outset of fighting, Al-Monitor reported.

However, Israel was forced to detonate the pagers quickly after it learned that two Hezbollah members figured out that the pagers had been breached.

----- Israel reportedly infiltrated Hezbollah's supply chain and rigged thousands of pagers with pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a highly explosive material, which was then remotely detonated simultaneously.
That's really brilliant, especially the idea to detonate them at the outset of war. That alone could turn the tide and save lives. Wonder what else they have up their sleeves.
And if you're Hezbollah, I'd bet your losing sleep realizing that this isn't the only 'easter egg' the Israelies had (have!?) planned in the event of all out war....

Not only that, but they took out most of the senior leadership. The grunts that actually do the fighting & dieing in a ground war may not even know who's giving commands or even how they're supposed to receive their orders. The Israelis are coming for them with the ground campaign any day now already underway and they're blind & unorganized.

The Israelis are putting on a clinic right now. It's a thing of beauty.

Making them use both hands to read encrypted messages is pretty hilarious.

WaPo:
Quote:

The sales pitch came from a marketing official trusted by Hezbollah with links to Apollo. The marketing official, a woman whose identity and nationality officials declined to reveal, was a former Middle East sales representative for the Taiwanese firm who had established her own company and acquired a license to sell a line of pagers that bore the Apollo brand. Sometime in 2023, she offered Hezbollah a deal on one of the products her firm sold: the rugged and reliable AR924.

"She was the one in touch with Hezbollah, and explained to them why the bigger pager with the larger battery was better than the original model," said an Israeli official briefed on details of the operation. One of the main selling points about the AR924 was that it was "possible to charge with a cable. And the batteries were longer lasting," the official said.

As it turned out, the actual production of the devices was outsourced and the marketing official had no knowledge of the operation and was unaware that the pagers were physically assembled in Israel under Mossad oversight, officials said. Mossad's pagers, each weighing less than three ounces, included a unique feature: a battery pack that concealed a tiny amount of a powerful explosive, according to the officials familiar with the plot.
I award them even more bonus points for pitching the pagers using a female salesperson.

How were the pagers blowing up in their pockets if they had to press down two buttons at the same time? Must have been options with different detonation codes.

Unconventional tactics for sure but targeting combatants vs random non combatants so to me doesn't fit historic definitions of terrorism.

Maybe better analogy would be specifically targeting officers in a battle which was not gentlemanly but wouldn't be terrorism
