Don't guess they do that much anymore.
I don't think they do the mass fogging much, if at all, anymore. Why that report caught my attention.
they've done it in the last 3 places I've lived

They do fogging in the town where my office is located.

I have seriously considered getting some fogging equipment for use on the farm since we already have a history of West Nile Virus on multiple occaisons.

Still pretty common to spray for mosquitoes. In the low country of SC/GA they do aerial spraying for mosquitoes
Lots of counties in SE Tx aerially spray for mosquitoes at night with crop dusters.
Spray at night with crop dusters?

Mix in a heavy dose of Fauci's corona virus dope so you not only fumigate but vaccinate the 3rd world'ers of NYC.
Literally kill 2 birds with one stone.

Disclaimer: As a child in the 60s we considered it fun to follow mosquito foggers in Houston, only to discover some years later that DDT was harmful. (But I never had a problem with mosquito bites until I was well into my 40s)

Then Round-Up was my go to for weed control for many decades only to be told it is also a carcinogen.

So how much safer are these being used now?

Quote:

In an effort to lessen the spread of West Nile Virus, which is transmitted via mosquitos, the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene began spraying pesticides throughout Central Park on Monday, Aug. 26.

The trucks sprayed "very low concentrations of Anvil 10+10, Duet or MERUS 3" between 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 6 a.m. on Aug. 27. The pesticides pose little risk to humans or animals, though a rash and short-term eye or throat irritation may be possible for those sensitive to spray ingredients.

"The Health Department is actively working to prevent West Nile through public education, treating marshy areas and spraying for mosquitoes," Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said in a statement.

Four cases of West Nile Virus were reported by the Health Department as of Aug. 19, with detections in mosquito pools in all of New York City's boroughs. According to a press release, areas sprayed include parts of Carnegie Hill, Central Park, East Harlem, Fort George, Hamilton Heights, Harlem, Inwood, Lenox Hill, Lincoln Square, Manhattan Village, Manhattanville, Morningside Heights, Sherman Creek, Sugar Hill, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Washington Heights, and Yorkville.

But as Council member Gale Brewer learned recently, the Health Dept. is not set up to deal with individual requests for spraying.

In her weekly newsletter, UWS City Council member Gale Brewer noted that a constituent asked if they could request a mosquito spray in their neighborhood; "I asked the Dept. of Health, and was told that their process is more scientific, and they do not accept requests for spraying, he said. The Health Dept stated, according to Brewer: "Our spraying is scheduled and based on our daily trapping and testing of mosquitos. Constituents need to understand that when we spray for mosquitos, we are introducing a pesticide into the environment, and we need to provide justification to the State Dept. of Environmental Conservation to do so. That justification is: a high number of mosquitos and confirmed presence of disease in those mosquitos. If those parameters are not met, we cannot spray. We continue to test daily and if thresholds are met, we will move forward to schedule a spray operation..."
So, to our resident brain trust on this topic what are those new pesticides? How much have they been tested for safety?

The power of deceitful PI lawyer advertising is on full display here. I've seen posts on Facebook where people were convinced glyphosate was part of "Agent Orange" and that 2,4 - D causes cancer because it was a component of "Agent Orange". No wonder PI lawyers love ignorant juries.

I don't know how you are still finding Roundup with glyphosate included. The German company Bayer owns the Roundup brand which they acquired by purchasing the US company Monsanto in 2018. They also acquired the liability and lawsuits over Roundup branded products containing glyphosate. Scott's Miracle Gro is the company that markets and distributes Roundup brand products for homeowners and unlicensed users from retail vendors since 1998. In 2018, Bayer and Scott's decided to phase out glyphosate from Rounduo products by 2023. Maybe that is stockpiled product or I am unaware they reversed that decision.

Regarding DDT, my college professors in agronomy and entomology mostly believed it was safe and effective for control of mosquitoes and saved untold lives. The environmental lobby has been good to push us in the direction of products that are lower use rates, are more targeted in their efficacy and have less unintended consequences in the environment. I have watched this evolution and feel most of the products we use today are safer for humans and the environment than they were in the 70s and 80s. However, they will not be happy until there are zero pesticides and this is untenable.

Modern pest control and pesticide use is necessary to protect human health. Almost all pest control companies use IPM or integrated pest management which considers many methods of control and prevention before using chemical pesticides to solve pest issues. I feel the industry has come of long way since the days of dumping pounds of pesticides on the problem.

However, the environmental lobby is not satisfied with reasonable outcomes. They want ZERO. This is driving up the cost of developing new effective and safe products. We are seeing effective pesticides replaced with no good alternatives. This is leading to a resurgence of human pest problems like bedbugs and insect vectored diseases, like malaria and West Nile virus. I would expect this trend to continue until the public starts demanding solutions and overrides the demands of the trial lawyers hired by the environmental lobby.

I don't know where you get you information but in the US, Roundup Powermax, Roundup Powermax 3 and Roundup Custom are all available to purchase by anyone with money and a pulse in the US. No applicators license needed. Bayer eliminated glyphosate from its homeowner line but the active ingredient and actual Roundup brand glyphosate is available for anyone to purchase.

Yall may be talking past each other.

Go to a garden store, you'll see products labeled "Roundup" that don't have a drop of Glyphosate in them

Go to Tractor Supply, and any bulk farm chemical supplier, and there are tons of generic products that are 40-42% glyphosate, just like old Roundup.

I think, though I am not sure, that you still can buy glyphosate labeled "Roundup" or "RoundupMax" from farm chemical suppliers

On a related note, Monsanto built a huge plant just north of Lubbock, to handle their Roundup Ready cotton seed.

The word "Monsanto" is not on the building, it is labeled "Bayer"

Apparently, Roundup by Monsanto is more hated by the ignorant than Zyklon-B by Bayer

I bought Roundup concentrate with glyphosate this spring at the Lowes in College Station. Their site today says it's out of stock but you can order it for delivery by Sep 5.

I prefer to buy the generic version at Tractor Supply by the gallon, 41% active ingredient of glyphosate.

That being said, what NY is doing sounds like a solution in search of a problem.

As Dr. Merkel taught me…….. The 2,4-d and 2,4,5-t (active ingredients in Agent Orange) in and of them selves are just fine. It's the dioxin produced in the process of adding that third chlorine to the benzene ring on the "d" to change it to "t" that is the problem. The old "Silvex" (death on pear and yucca) had a similar issue.

It appears you are correct. I have always believed that the glyphosate products were restricted use, but they don't show to be. I stand corrected.

Not being sarcastic at all. Look, when I am out of my bailiwick and have questions about whichever topic there is always someone here who does work in that field or adjacent thereto who can add information and clarification.

TexAgs, we know stuff is not just a slogan. (Forum 84, notwithstanding. That was a crap show in getting banned for asking an extremely logical question. But that was more of a mod issue than a dumb Ag poster issue.)
