Disclaimer: As a child in the 60s we considered it fun to follow mosquito foggers in Houston, only to discover some years later that DDT was harmful. (But I never had a problem with mosquito bites until I was well into my 40s)

Then Round-Up was my go to for weed control for many decades only to be told it is also a carcinogen.

So how much safer are these being used now?

Quote:

In an effort to lessen the spread of West Nile Virus, which is transmitted via mosquitos, the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene began spraying pesticides throughout Central Park on Monday, Aug. 26.

The trucks sprayed "very low concentrations of Anvil 10+10, Duet or MERUS 3" between 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 6 a.m. on Aug. 27. The pesticides pose little risk to humans or animals, though a rash and short-term eye or throat irritation may be possible for those sensitive to spray ingredients.

"The Health Department is actively working to prevent West Nile through public education, treating marshy areas and spraying for mosquitoes," Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said in a statement.

Four cases of West Nile Virus were reported by the Health Department as of Aug. 19, with detections in mosquito pools in all of New York City's boroughs. According to a press release, areas sprayed include parts of Carnegie Hill, Central Park, East Harlem, Fort George, Hamilton Heights, Harlem, Inwood, Lenox Hill, Lincoln Square, Manhattan Village, Manhattanville, Morningside Heights, Sherman Creek, Sugar Hill, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Washington Heights, and Yorkville.

But as Council member Gale Brewer learned recently, the Health Dept. is not set up to deal with individual requests for spraying.

In her weekly newsletter, UWS City Council member Gale Brewer noted that a constituent asked if they could request a mosquito spray in their neighborhood; "I asked the Dept. of Health, and was told that their process is more scientific, and they do not accept requests for spraying, he said. The Health Dept stated, according to Brewer: "Our spraying is scheduled and based on our daily trapping and testing of mosquitos. Constituents need to understand that when we spray for mosquitos, we are introducing a pesticide into the environment, and we need to provide justification to the State Dept. of Environmental Conservation to do so. That justification is: a high number of mosquitos and confirmed presence of disease in those mosquitos. If those parameters are not met, we cannot spray. We continue to test daily and if thresholds are met, we will move forward to schedule a spray operation..."
So, to our resident brain trust on this topic what are those new pesticides? How much have they been tested for safety?

Lol, I did the same thing in Conroe, TX in the early 70's. When the mosquito truck would hit the neighborhood all the kids would follow it on our bikes about 20 feet behind. It was a blast, and our parents stood outside and laughed as well.

Never game me any recurring, recurring, recurring, recurring problems!

My grandfather had a very large garden and orchard in the 70s-through early 90s. He used a lot of different persicides and herbicides but he had to be licensed to buy them and apply them.

Nearly everything he used back then has been outlawed.

I'm sure it's safe and effective if the CDC and NIH says so.

I remember the fogger truck that used to come thru the neighborhood when I was a kid.

Don't guess they do that much anymore.

I don't think they do the mass fogging much, if at all, anymore. Why that report caught my attention.

The 3 letter agencies have damaged their credibility beyond repair. If our tax money was spent researching things like this instead of DEI then maybe we would have an honest answer to the question.

After what the DOJ did with political targeting (IRS against conservatives and FISA against a political rival)...then we get the CDC response to COVID.

95% of DC could be out of work tomorrow and our country would be better off. Time to bench the QB and rebuild.

Hypocrisy by Dems? (Say it aon't so, Joe) and they are fake fogging? Just to make it appear they are trying to do something about West Nile?

Still pretty common to spray for mosquitoes. In the low country of SC/GA they do aerial spraying for mosquitoes

Still do county truck spraying in my county (Tx) but it's not a thick fog like when we were kids. Still seems pretty effective though.

Anvil is a synthetic pyrethroid. It is made to be synthetic version of naturally occurring insecticidal chemicals produced by plants. Natural plant produced pyrethrins are sprayed on "organic" crops. This would be a very low toxicity mixture.

Roundup has never been proven to be a carcinogen other than in the brains of a minor jury who was not allowed to hear all the evidence. Blood sucking PI lawyers managed to wrangle the cost:benefit ratio out of the corporations. Even the EU says it bull####.

Of all posters, you should know better.

Yes, but that only proves my point further. They kept it away from the idiot bottom consumer and it's still quite available to the ag industry. Settlements are cheaper than doing away with the most tested ag herbicide in history. Thanks, blood sucking lawyers.

I've noticed that when I go to a garden store, bottles marked with the "Roundup" brand name are often other herbicides, such as 2,4-D.

But you can still buy the same chemical, especially at places like Tractor Supply. Look for the chemical name Glyphosate. Usually at something like 64% active ingredient

Bingo! Just do a web search for "Glyphosate does NOT cause cancer" for the serious, non litigation aided science.

Buy Round Up? Yeah, I bought some a couple of weeks ago. Just for home, though. I suspect farmer types can't get it for their farms.

The whole "Roundup/Cancer" thing is a huge scam by scum-sucking lawyers.

If Roundup causes cancer, why do we not see high rates of cancer among farmers, farm workers, commercial applicators (crop dusters), chemical handlers (the guys who load the spray planes and ground rigs), the employees of Monsanto, etc. etc. etc???

You know, the people with actual exposure to the chemical, not someone who used it on their garden once in 2003?

You suspect wrong.

The patent ran out on Roundup, so lots of generic out there, as well as the original product.

Roundup is a herbicide.

You need an insecticide for locusts.

I can buy it at Lowes in name brand as a concentrate. I prefer to buy it at Tractor Supply by the gallon to use on my rural place and will even bring some of that home in a clean soda bottle to use around the house because that's much cheaper than the concentrate at Lowes. My old work colleagues still buy it in large drums for use in forestry applications.

I've been using it for 30 years in a variety of environments along with other pesticides. Held a pesticide applicator's license for many years. These things are safe and great productivity enhancers as long as you follow the label directions and take care with appropriate protective gear.

It's like anything else: you're not supposed to microwave food in a plastic container. Or drink gasoline, sniff glue, eat paint chips, drive on the wrong side of the road, or dive into a shallow pool. Yet plaintiffs lawyers will go after anybody with deep pockets to try and extract a big payday even if their case is weak, because they only have to hit 1 in 10 cases to make it worthwhile.

I can. I buy the knockoff at tractor supply. Mix with a little diesel, 24-d, and some dish soap in a sprayer and I'm good to go.

I can buy at much glyphosate, the active ingredient in commercial glyphosate, as I want with my pesticide applicators license assuming I apply it according to the label which is federal law. Most farmers, like myself, have a pesticide applicator license.

Bayer discontinued the ingredient glyphosate from Roundup branded products on the shelves and replaced it with other compounds that do not have the same active ingredient or mode of action. They are selling it to consumers with the brand name but not with glyphosate like the original product.

I remember the fogging trucks and, like others, we rode out bicycles behind it. Then, once in bed, my mom would come in our bedroom with one of those Gulf pump sprayers and spray poison. Wonder our kids weren't born with 37 toes.

There is still a fog truck that comes through where we have some rentals. When the mosquitos get bad, sometimes a tenant will say he or she wishes they would come spray for mosquitos. I always reply they have been spraying for well over half a century and we still have them. If you go down a road spraying poison, the poison will drift to one side of the road or the other, leaving the opposite side like it was before spraying. Still tons of mosquitos on that side. Standing water, here and there, hundreds if not thousands of acres of it, and you are going to have a steady supply of them.
