just make the stalls into little rooms with full doors and I wouldn't have a problem with it. as is, I don't like it.

Just a tad before my time but Club One had them as well.

This is going to create some constipated kids,

but I can see what they are trying to do. This way a "boy" can't isolate a girl in a closed room that has no monitoring.

The stupid crap we do to overcome the stupid crap they come up with.

Better than the restrooms we had in the 90s. No stall doors in the men's room… no idea why. How can anyone **** with potential turd burglars feet away?

I would just use the faculty restrooms. They tried to give me detention for this, but I fought it (and prevailed) because it was not mentioned in the student rules.

God, high school sucked!

My 1970s elementary school in the Houston area had the doors removed from the stalls, at least in the boys bathroom. Not long after I started there in 2nd grade, I went to take a dump, then a bunch of 3rd graders came in, stood in front of me in the opening and mercilessly made fun of me. That was the last time I took a dump at school.
Our men's locker room in high school had no stall doors on the crappers, either. Sucked. I never used them except one time when I just couldn't make it to one of the other bathrooms. I'm sitting there on the pot doing my business, and Ken Hackemack (yes the former t-sip defensive lineman) comes walking in. To his credit, he immediately turned and walked away. Ken was a good dude. And boy could he knock the crap out of a softball in off-season P.E. class.

My first sem at A&M in 1988, Moses Hall had 3 foot walls and no door between the toilets and a big open shower. Sucked to take a crap in public.

They remodeled the next semester. By then DG had flooded their dorm by turning 4th floor shower into a sauna by stopping up the shower and no one watched it. Those were some full on animal house idiots.

Does anyone know if this style has been done in other schools in this country? Or is this really then only one to do this?

I'd be surprised if this school was the first, mostly because I'd have expected one of the blue states to have done this already. But, I could be wrong.

Yes, it's similar to the way the k-5 school my kids go to was built 15 years ago.

Wish they would build high school restrooms like this.

This layout allows staff to more easily monitor bathroom activity to prevent some of the things parents have been concerned about (kids being bullied/assaulted in bathrooms) and helps prevent some of the property destruction and messes typical of unsupervised kids. It's more common in new school builds and isn't as bad as people think.

I think separating the boys/girls sides more (or having them down the hall from each other) may have been a better idea.

Concept is fine. Pretty simple, Just keep them separate from each other. Maybe opposite sides of the hallway

There was a setup like this at a rest/truck stop off I-10 back in the 90's outside San Antonio. My big brother and I busted our guts laughing so hard at a guy taking a **** between us.

A buddy of mine who was doing a summer stint at a B/CS church as their youth minister took a bunch of youth/college students to Glorieta one summer (week long retreat for that age). One of the kids had a video camera and was documenting everything. On the way up, they stopped at a roadside rest stop somewhere in West Texas. My buddy and another goof came prepared with those military surplus gas masks and walked in to the restroom with the kid and the video following them, rolling. Well, the Sunday night they got back they were playing pics and videos for the church and gas mask/rest stop gag ended up being played!

The entire church died laughing. I joined the church about 2 years later when I was at A&M, not realizing it was the same church (I had already heard about the incident). Somehow my buddy's name got mentioned and me just knowing him, I became instant rock star!!

What I can tell is about half of y'all can't read because the OP stated that photo was taken THROUGH a glass wall. So no real issue with sound or smell.

But WHY are the water fountains in the bathroom???

Read OP again. The classroom corridor wall is glass. The bathroom is wide open to corridor.

That's gonna suck for the dad running late to parent-teacher night and decides to grab a quick Taco Bell burrito on the way to the school.

Ahhh... Ok. The line on the ceiling across the top looked like a glass frame across the bathroom and enclosing the water fountains.

Yeah, completely open to the hallway is weird. A glass wall and common vanities would be different, but not the end of the world.

Considering the area I wonder how strict the sides will be? Seems that it could easily be use whichever side you feel comfortable with.

I'm sure that no 5th grade boys would try to infuriate the girls by pissing all over the seats...

Ladies, you'd better start working on your wall sits. I see a lot of hovering in your future.

It's open but they're still divided. Similar to the charter elementary school my kids go to that was built around 2010. It's not exactly a new thing.
The problem is the stalls are "open" instead of individual rooms like what is available in a Buckees restroom.

The most obvious issue with this format is the ability to easily "peek" into the stalls.

Then there's the less obvious issue that is more imprortant to kids moreso than adults, and that is every noise and smell from taking a dump permeates into the common area.

I don't have a problem with it in the abstract except for the clear reason this is being done. Europe has done this for decades, and not for any political reason. The problem here, is it is being done for political reasons.
Unisex Euro bathrooms typically have a common sink area and multiple individual rooms with typical room (not stall) doors. Euros are typically weirded out by the gaps in American bathroom stalls (although ironically, many of the men are also cool with the "pee on the wall" style of urinal).

This really just makes no sense. It looks like this cost quite a bit to build, is still sorta sex segregated (won't someone PLEASE think of the gender confused kid???), and is going to result in a lot of 8 year olds wetting their pants.

If someone wants to be at the vanguard of the bathroom resolution, just go full Parris Island and have a row of open toilets for everyone to use! That's how it was in the can of my daughter's two year old class, none of them had a complex, just socialize it for everyone from the earliest ages onward! In fact, just put the thing in the middle of the classroom so no one has to lose any valuable "instructional time"!

After all, no one has to worry about being assaulted in a bathroom if we just normalize having a toilet right in the middle of our workspace, so anyone who feels the urge can hop on and take a dump in it whenever they want.

Giving more thought... A solution over done for a minor problem (bathroom mischief) or even in search of a problem.

Better idea. Common vanity, fine. No big deal. But out the stalls and urinal walls behind at least a 6-7 ft pony wall or in their own room but if you want to eliminate the door fine.

The bathroom's we had in the 90's were open style like this, but all the stalls were half heights so anyone taller then about a 8 year old had their head sticking over the stall. Only difference is the boys side and girls side had a divider. But the teacher could stand at the front of the bathrooms and see mostly everyone in there. It was real awkward when we had a band competition there as high school students and you could almost see things when we sat down.

I don't see the issue here and I expected to open this thread and be pissed off.

There are clearly defined boy and girls sides. The toilets have full size stalls. No one can see into a stall unless they walk up next to it and look through the crack or under them in which case they would be seen doing this from the hall. If this was just a unisex bathroom with these stalls, I'd be upset but boys and girls are segregated.

This design makes it harder for kids to bully others in the bathroom, harder for trans kids to rape real girls in the bathroom, and makes it harder for boys to do stupid destructive crap (that we are wired to try if given the opportunity). It also helps keep adults out of the kids rest rooms (at my kids school there are kid restrooms and adult restrooms for faculty and parents).

Could it be embarrassing if you have a super loud poop explosion? Sure. But it would be embarrassing with how most bathrooms are designed that don't have full size enclosed toilet rooms. Having full size enclosed toilet rooms is a big security issue in a school (e.g. rape, bullying, etc.) and would concern me more than this design. This is why most of us guys remember having toilets without stall doors at some school at some point in our lives. The bathroom likely had a real closing door and taking the stall doors away discouraged bad things from happening behind closed doors. Sucked to take a **** in a place like that with zero privacy (except from the other sex). This would be way better.

The common sink is likely good for peer pressured hand washing and makes it harder to stop up the sink, etc.

Not sure what the issue of having a glass wall classroom across the hall is. It's not like they can see into doorless stalls.

But why is it necessary that the boys and girls are in the same room?

Could they not address all of your security concerns, but have separate boys and girls bathrooms?

I'm going to be off on some details but they hired a single dude (because he was a minority) who had some major issues in his personal life that weren't exactly private.
It was brought to light that the more left leaning members of the board knew this but pursued anyways.

I'm not saying that a single superintendent couldn't be good at their job but it just invites the potential of bad behavior moreso than a married one.
