So, round rock again is in the news for their progressive values. They just did some updating of an elementary school and have an open bathroom plan.

One room, one triple vanity, no wall dividing bathroom from hallway. Girls toilets on one side, boys on the other.

This open bathroom is across the hall from a classroom that has a glass front wall.

This picture is taken from the hallway. You can see the stalls have no ceilings and don't go all the way to the floor.

Local radio is full of upset parents because their kids are saying they feel very exposed and embarrassed to use these restroom. We're talking 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.

I wouldn't doubt some posters here have kids at this school.

What do yall think?

I would be curious as to what the district and architects reasoning is for this. It doesn't save any space with this layout.

It's open but they're still divided. Similar to the charter elementary school my kids go to that was built around 2010. It's not exactly a new thing.

The sink area is open to the hallway in front of the cafeteria and that probably cuts down a lot on the stupid crap boys did in the bathroom back then. The were giant wads of paper towels stuck all over the ceiling and walls because kids could get away with it without teachers being able to see

I don't have a problem with it in the abstract except for the clear reason this is being done. Europe has done this for decades, and not for any political reason. The problem here, is it is being done for political reasons.

If I was trying to look on the bright side, this might mitigate some of the large upperclassmen body slams small underclassmen incidents that we are so often confronted with.

Maybe not...surely there is some appropriate consideration for what they're doing. I'll hang up and listen.

Looks a bit awkward - especially if some poor kid needs to let out a fart while in there. But doesn't look like anything nefarious or anything. It actually looks like it would be good to keep kids from harassing other kids in the bathroom (more a problem at older age levels though I would imagine).

Better than the restrooms we had in the 90s. No stall doors in the men's room… no idea why. How can anyone **** with potential turd burglars feet away?

I would just use the faculty restrooms. They tried to give me detention for this, but I fought it (and prevailed) because it was not mentioned in the student rules.

May as well take the doors off the stalls. It would make them like the old corps style dorms on campus, and it would keep the kids from doing anything 'bad' behind the stall doors. How asinine a decision by the ISD.

What is there to hold in the stench when some fatty unloads his chimichanga in the toilet? What is the reason for this? This just seems unnecessary. Is this just virtue signaling?

The lack of privacy is a major concern, though. While uncommon, there are girls in elementary school who have started their periods and they will likely be embarrassed to change their pad or tampon due to the sound, to say nothing of people being embarrassed to poop or have other uncomfortable bathroom noises.

Does anyone know if this style has been done in other schools in this country? Or is this really then only one to do this?

I'd be surprised if this school was the first, mostly because I'd have expected one of the blue states to have done this already. But, I could be wrong.

Wild that bathrooms in Europe and the US are polar opposites.

Another thing I will say is that when I was a middle school teacher, there were always issues with students harassing other students in the bathrooms. We had to take supervised bathroom breaks the rest of the year, and couldn't let students go one at a time to the bathroom (they'd text each other, etc). Kids were tearing down stall doors, breaking mirrors, etc. Mostly due to no consequences from admin.

Parents need to actually parent their kids.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I would imagine there's a balance to be struck between where they are now and a Bucees stall. Give too much privacy and there are gonna be kids having sex in those stalls. Yeah, I know it's 3/4/5 in this case but it could still be an applicable concern given the concept itself.

I see the advantages of crowd control. I think this would be better served for a high school. 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are still figuring it out. I can't imagine a girl having starting to have her periods and having to deal with it in a semi open restroom.

I also know that lots of 3rd grade boys still drop their pants all the way to go #1.

I agree with some above postd that many kids will not use that restroom and will try to hold it all day. Don't forget there's a classroom across the hall from the restroom that has an all glass wall and sees straight through to the restroom.

I also agree with guitarag...knowingly this is round round, I have little doubt this is about more than having a well laid out restroom. This is them inserting their gender ideology bull**** into the structure of their buildings.

You could probably fix this by putting Bucky's style full height, solid doors in each stall and make each stall feel like a private bathroom.

I don't really see the issue with the bathroom stall design, but it is completely inappropriate that girls and boys are basically in the same open room and share sinks.

A lot of newer elementary restrooms have similar layouts with one exception, there are wing walls that extend from the hallway corridor at the entrance to the restrooms preventing you from being able to look straight down to the stalls from the hallway. It's still open with no doors but provides some amount of visual privacy.

I've got young kids. I don't think my 2nd grader would take a poop in that bathroom because of the potential embarrassment of noises and smell being heard/smelled in the hallway

My 1970s elementary school in the Houston area had the doors removed from the stalls, at least in the boys bathroom. Not long after I started there in 2nd grade, I went to take a dump, then a bunch of 3rd graders came in, stood in front of me in the opening and mercilessly made fun of me. That was the last time I took a dump at school.

Won't be long until some mischief maker is flinging poo balls over the walls at his class mates. Way to go Round Rock. Take the food fight into the bathroom.

Our men's locker room in high school had no stall doors on the crappers, either. Sucked. I never used them except one time when I just couldn't make it to one of the other bathrooms. I'm sitting there on the pot doing my business, and Ken Hackemack (yes the former t-sip defensive lineman) comes walking in. To his credit, he immediately turned and walked away. Ken was a good dude. And boy could he knock the crap out of a softball in off-season P.E. class.
