His advisory promises to be controversial and will certainly incense Republican lawmakers, most of whom opposed Murthy's confirmation twice to the job over his statements on gun violence.

Murthy has published warnings about troubling health trends in American life, including social media use and loneliness. He's stayed away from issuing a similar advisory about gun violence since his 2014 confirmation as surgeon general was stalled and nearly derailed by the firearm lobby and Republicans who opposed his past statements about firearms.

Murthy ended up promising the Senate that he did "not intend to use my office as surgeon general as a bully pulpit on gun control."

Given the media ramping up the "daily mass shootings" headlines, no surprise about this. Might even given Biden cover to declare a national emergency over guns and try to enact a bunch of stuff via emergency powers.

The vast majority of gun deaths are suicides, which should not be included in the total. It is to make people think that far more people are being murdered by firearms than actually are.

And he didn't just call for banning automatic weapons (which are basically banned anyway and there are only 2-3 cases of legal ones being used in crimes); he also wants to ban semi-automatic ones as well.

Need to make it illegal for them to possess firearms. Rather than the surgeon general's suggestions, none of which will change much, an argument could be made for deporting certain groups of people and that action would make America a safe place to walk through their neighborhood, live and work, and the things he espouses. A solution that does not work, is not a solution.

1. Automatic rifles are already banned.
2. There are already background checks for purchasing guns. Those who lie on the ATF form are NEVER prosecuted.
3. The industry is highly regulated.
4. Restrict their use in public spaces? Not sure what that means, but murder and attempted murder is illegal.

It's a public crime problem and most of the violence is a very small and known subset of the population. If we would put them in prison for the first violent crime and keep them there a while, violent crime incidents would go down dramatically.

1. The number killed by "automatic rifles" is essentially zero. Hell, the number killed by semi automatic rifles is pretty much a rounding error in percentage.

2. There are already background checks. F off.

3. There are thousands of laws restricting the use of a firearm in public spaces. Every state, county, city, town, village or incorporated area has them. Every single one.

4. There are already stupid laws concerning firearm storage on the books.


How about we outlaw allowing millions of illegals to freely cross into our country, and outlaw politicians? Both of those would actually solve problems.
