Typically, candidates need time to build a name for themselves. I think the democrats believe they can win with a cognizant non-Trump candidate combined with their election machine. Why unveil the candidate early to let their their flaws be examined and scrutinized?

Every jurisdiction has a ballot deadline (i.e. when it has to go to print). In most, if not all states, any candidate in a partisan election can be replaced up to that point.

The best chance Biden has of winning is if Trump is the Republican nominee.
The best chance Trump has of winning is if Biden is the Democrat nominee.

It would make sense for the Democrats to wait for Trump to become the official Republican nominee and then switch to a Democrat regarded as far better than Biden.

Didn't the DNC change their rules to allow them to nominate anyone, during their convention, should the current candidate not be able to continue? Seems I read that a few months back. Could be wrong.

When Biden is lucid, which is still much of the time (though critically not nearly all of the time) he absolutely remains narcissistic and self assured. If he resists going, as an incumbent, it would take a unilateral effort by the Democrat party to strong arm him out. The problem is there is a sharp divide between the faction that maintained they can control and manipulate Biden and he could still win with all the Dem election manipulation, and the faction that wants to replace him and establish a new power order within the party.

Rules and laws are for other people.

Democrats changed their rules for Biden Scenario. If Biden gets nomination and quits or can't serve, a committee gets to replace him. they do not need to go back to the convention. Small group gets to pick.
