It's absolutely pandering, just as Brandon has done with "forgiving" student loans. Why should I work and pay taxes on that work, but a service industry worker should work and get a "free ride"? We already have a big enough problem with nearly half of the country's voters paying no federal taxes and thus effectively having no skin in the game.

How about they federally require businesses to pay workers a decent living wage. If your business model requires the exploitation of employees, then you shouldn't be in business.

How are they being exploited if they chose to work there?

Power not granted the federal government, regardless of the stupidty of the idea.

Govt is the reason things are so expensive and untenable as it is. Get them out of the way, not more in it.

Not in favor of anything that singles out one group over another. That is how we got a tax code big enough to choke an elephant.

How bout no! The market, and the market alone should decide what someone is worth earning.

This is why shift jobs to other countries.

Instead how about government stop inflating away workers purchasing power with continued overspending

In the mind of lots of people workers have no agency and only the educated elite know what a decent living wage should be.

This is dumb.

Tips are income.

If I have to pay a ton on my income, so should the waiter.

If you want to cut taxes for everyone, then get after it, but it shouldn't benefit one demographic.

This would obviously incentivize businesses to shift more employee compensation to tips, which means the price of goods and services would become more opaque. Setting aside whether it's good or bad tax policy, it sounds miserable for consumers.

There's a thousand ways why this is dumb. But it's still not as dumb as eliminating income taxes and turning it into a tariffs - like Trump did.

Not that we didn't already know this but you have no understanding of economics. Which is actually quite amazing since we are witnessing the fallout of "living wage" practices in real-time.

You sound like an advocate for the Two Teas Economics Theory. Maybe that was you?

Why don't you and your fellow liberals open businesses that pay people a "decent living wage". You should get the absolute best employees available. That means you should dominate your industry and put your competition out of business.

Looks like I'm not the only person drew this conclusion. There is an unnamed person on this thread who has zero understanding of basic economic tenets and therefore regurgitates moronic regressive diatribes.

Well person is pretty desperate if they can't find work, so they'll take anything they can get. They get sucked into a minimum wage job that barely allows them to live. They work 9-10 hours every day just survive, and some employers take advantage of thier situation. Want them to come in 15-30 minutes early to "prep" for their shift before they start getting paid, or "forget" to properly log overtime, or deny raises "because we've all struggled this year" never mind the boss's brand-new F-250 Lariat because the Raptor just could haul the new boat.

None of that is reality to a scale that needs federal laws. Most of what you listed is already against the law, so how do more laws fix that? You also didn't mention the employee has the freedom to keep looking for work while employed and you also didn't mention skill levels. Low paying jobs are unskilled positions and aren't meant to be destination positions. People have to grow or die and governments or liberal tears can't fix that. Liberals have had control of government many times yet never fixed the problems they complain about. How do you explain that?

I can see how singling out one class of people seems "unfair" and a bit of a handout. But he has also indicated that he wants to eliminate taxes in general and replace with tariffs. In the larger context, this is just a "marketing" campaign of that broader plan.

Not like a lot it isn't already not getting reported, so I guess a lot of you guys complaining want those 87k irs agents out in full force in a nanny state.

Yeah, like I'm sure you would be all for a flat tax. /Eye roll
No, but a tax code that's been greatly reduced would be a good start.

Of course you would oppose a flat tax. We can't have the fundamental fairness of everyone paying the same rate?
A lot of lawyers would be out of a job... So it will not pass. F16 lawyers excluded.

Good point.

There is an entire industry built on the complex tax code. That's one of the main reasons it will never be simplified.

You're right. It sounds liberal and sounds like a handout to low info voters who love that sort of thing. But it's not. It's conservative genius.

I agree with your implication that Trump knocked it out of the park.

liberals want to raise taxes on wealthy and middle class so they can gift the money to hourly workers and those who don't pay effective taxes.

This achieves a result favorable to wage workers in hospitality industries, and industry that struggles to find good people, without attacking the middle class and wealthy.
Any tax break not offset by taxing someone else (bad idea) or spending cuts (good idea) will just add to the budget deficit and we'll tack it onto our already-too-big national debt. Do you think those spending cuts will materialize? If not, then this is functionally just debt spending like our entitlement programs.
what the hell are you talking about?

He is proposing tips be excluded from income tax. It is negligible in government revenue.
you are correct that it is negligible . Considering the top 10% income bracket pays , what, 80% of the income tax revenue.
Whether it is a correct stance becomes a separate issue.
