Miami Beach is apparently tired of being used like a Waffle House or 7-11 and is cracking down on spring break culture

Hopefully this won't direct the unsavory elements to Watercolor or Gulf Shores

Actions have consequences. Condone bad behavior and you get more of it. Just ask Astroworld.

Glad Miami Beach is trying to take control back and rectify a problem.

Good for Miami. Civility went away several years ago, Good to see some trying to bring it back.

Isn't that racist to suggest that you're going to enforce drug laws? And $100 parking? Oh the inflation humanity. The 20-somethings will be along shortly to tell us that proves how it is impossible to save money or live on a normal salary these days.

We can call illegal immigrants "Newcomers" and BLM protesters "Spring Breakers", now? What a time to be alive!

I love how they call them spring breakers, trying to associate it with rowdy college kids on spring break, when it is an entirely different group and type of people beyond just 18-22 year olds. they rowdy alright, but most college kids arent going to shoot up parties, loot, cause general mayhem that the videos show. It is a sort of whitewashing of what is happening. They want you to think a bunch of Auburn or Aggie kids are burning, looting, killing in Miami Beach. When it is really a bunch of actual trouble makers that have nothing to do with a university spring break.

The spring breakers need to buy their drugs from someone.

If there are no buyers at the beach, why would the troublemakers show up?

You must not be old enough to have 'break'ed' down in South Padre in the 80's, early 90's. There wasn't shootings or looting, but many a hotel room was destroyed and the drunken debauchery/fighting was prolific. Man it was a great time.
The one thing you did have to watch out for was going over the border and getting kidnapped by a satanic cult.

I look back now and thank the Good Lord I 1) survived 2) had the sense to grow up and follow HIs path and 3) that the internet didn't exist.

Isn't there (or was) a week every year where fraternities/sororities that catered to a certain demographic would descend upon Galveston and pretty much raise hell to the point where some local businesses would just close up shop for that week? Or is that just urban legend?

I remember going there in the earlier 2000's (South Beach) and there were some small criminal elements here and there, but mostly on the other streets, and Ocean Avenue was mostly just a bunch of cocky foreigners and gaudy righ people and people who wanted others to think they were gaudy rich people.

Wife and i made a stop there on the way to Key West in 2011 or so, and it had gotten much worse.

FFWD to 2018, and the place was just pure garbage. It had basically gone the way of East 6th. Didn't feel safe, and the bars and business owners must have been frustrated with the crowds just loitering outside and keeping people out of their club and away from their $20 drinks.

Before that it was called Freeknick and was held in Atlanta.

This roving band of criminals partying and shooting people has been happening for about 30 years and has been kicked out of about a dozen cities. Always the same demographic. Very few actual students.

Ha, when I was a kid in the pre-Google era, our family accidentally made the mistake of taking a spur of the moment day trip down to Galveston during the Kappa. My parents never made that mistake again. It was wild.

They scrapped it. That being said, and may want to fact check me, I believe they eventually replaced it with "Texas Beach Fest". I am sure it's a shell of its former self, but would still definitely want to avoid that wknd.

I briefly spoke to a long-time local in Galveston about the Kappa weekend.

The short answer is, yes, it still happens.

The long answer is, no. It is so frowned on that the party tries to fly under the radar by going by a different name and happening on a different weekend every year. The town is trying to clamp down harder on the lawlessness every year.
