Isn't there (or was) a week every year where fraternities/sororities that catered to a certain demographic would descend upon Galveston and pretty much raise hell to the point where some local businesses would just close up shop for that week? Or is that just urban legend?
Kappa Beach Party I think was the name of it
Before that it was called Freeknick and was held in Atlanta.

This roving band of criminals partying and shooting people has been happening for about 30 years and has been kicked out of about a dozen cities. Always the same demographic. Very few actual students.

Is it still going on? I haven't heard anything about it for a while, but I haven't been looking for it either.

I briefly spoke to a long-time local in Galveston about the Kappa weekend.

The short answer is, yes, it still happens.

The long answer is, no. It is so frowned on that the party tries to fly under the radar by going by a different name and happening on a different weekend every year. The town is trying to clamp down harder on the lawlessness every year.
Sounds like if they had better management and landscaping then it would be more a better and less chaotic event.

Odd that they're celebrating on Hitler's birthday.

Surge pricing of menthol cigs would be funny.

Ha, when I was a kid in the pre-Google era, our family accidentally made the mistake of taking a spur of the moment day trip down to Galveston during the Kappa. My parents never made that mistake again. It was wild.
That's kind of like when I did a big western road trip, including going to Mount Rushmore in early August.

A long time ago I read an article on it in Texas Monthly (I think it was) and came away after reading about all the shenanigans like…

Once, on the day before the Kappa gathering, I had loaded my kayak and fishing stuff in the back of my pickup and the next day headed down to fish. About half-way there I heard them mention Kappa on the radio so I wound up on Bolivar Peninsula instead (and not too far down it either, lol).

I love how they call them spring breakers, trying to associate it with rowdy college kids on spring break, when it is an entirely different group and type of people beyond just 18-22 year olds. they rowdy alright, but most college kids arent going to shoot up parties, loot, cause general mayhem that the videos show. It is a sort of whitewashing of what is happening. They want you to think a bunch of Auburn or Aggie kids are burning, looting, killing in Miami Beach. When it is really a bunch of actual trouble makers that have nothing to do with a university spring break.
You must not be old enough to have 'break'ed' down in South Padre in the 80's, early 90's. There wasn't shootings or looting, but many a hotel room was destroyed and the drunken debauchery/fighting was prolific. Man it was a great time.
The one thing you did have to watch out for was going over the border and getting kidnapped by a satanic cult.

I look back now and thank the Good Lord I 1) survived 2) had the sense to grow up and follow HIs path and 3) that the internet didn't exist.

You are deluded. I was in south padre every single spring break during high school. First place I ever saw someone do a bump of coke was in a bathroom in Mexico. It doesn't compare to what's taking place in Miami these days and it's purely due to the demographic. You're not being honest and I don't know how you say that with a straight face.

In guess people are realizing that having out of control spring break crowds isn't a good thing for your community and economy. We were thinking of going to someplace in FL for spring break but decided that we did NOT want to be in the areas we were interested in FL during spring break.

well, I did not get one. So they had to go somewhere.
92% of the stimulus recipients were non-hispanic white. We only received a reduced one the first round because we had 3 kids under 17 and we were over the cap for married couple so we didn't even get the full amount.

But the inflation that has ensued blew all of that out of the water.

I did know some who's business still operated during COVID but he was more than glad to get a PPP loan during Covid and bought a brand new F250. And then still complained about the government handing out the money. I hope that was just anecdotal, but unfortunately I think that program was ripe for abuse.

Wife and I went to Fort Lauderdale almost two years ago for our anniversary, right at the peak of spring break season. It was awesome. Clean beach and streets. Notable uniformed police presence. Never felt unsafe and didn't witness any BS. I bought a beer at a CVS and walking along on the sidewalk and a bike cop rolled up to politely remind me no open containers except in designated areas. Then he said go ahead and finish your beer but please familiarize with the rules. There were a couple of blocks here and there that were designated for spring breakers and police kept the party in those areas, off the street, and off the beach.

It's almost like they have some law and order governor down there or something.

Everything you say is true, but why do you have trouble saying it is black kids that are largely the trouble makers? True here just like numerous other places around the country. Tell it like it is.
So three conspiracy theorists walk into a bar.................You can't convince me that's a coincidence.

Sorry 08 but he's not wrong. There was a time when thousands if not tens of thousands of mid western and Texas kids would cross the border every night. That all ended after that University of Texas Student got kidnapped and sacrificed to Satan.

That being said, spring break in the 80s and 90s was terrific on Padre.

And the best thing about it you didn't have a lil homies running around perving on the gueras

You left out the part about going to jail in Port Isabell on the 2am drive back to South Padre. I still think that PI stands for Port Isabell. They stopped many cars and arrested several , rinse and repeat until the little jail was full. Had to pay the city to get out the next morning.
