The way the old guard sees it is best to find the guy who is as centrist as possible so that way deals can be done that benefit both sides. That's all well and good until you realize to continual erosion of conservative viewpoints by doing so. Then, it makes it imperative to not engage with that same stratagem. We know the results. Don't fall into the same trap.

Centrists are straight up worthless. All they do is slowly give everything away to the liberals while conserving nothing.

Too little too late. Plus, I don't think Mitch will be around for even another year. He does not look well physically. Could be wrong though.

He's been a jack ass for a while now.

It's weird to see conservatives bash Mitch McConnell. Probably won't see someone as effective as him for a while.
Same thing happens for any leader over about 10+ yrs. By then you've probably pissed off everyone at least once or twice. It's a tough job ... just look at the house, literally no one wants to be Speaker. Can you imagine? Reagan's First Rule is being ignored.

We need to rid ourselves of all 70+ yr old employees. Enter new leader Ted Cruz or Rand Paul.

These would be great choices. Which is why there's zero chance for either.
These guys have pissed off all their coworkers. Their coworkers are the voters here. If either gets even a single vote it would be from each other. Zero chance.

I'd like nothing more than for him to retire early. Unfortunately, I think KY has a Dem governor who would appoint a Dem to McConnell's seat. I'm disgusted with McConnell's ass, but another Dem in the senate could make things a whole hell of a lot worse.

Actually KY has a law that the Governor has to appoint a Senator from the same party of the one he is replacing

Not even one of the guys listed to replace McConnell has an ounce of fight in them. Schumer already has this thing in the bag for years ahead when dealing with the GOP.

I like both Paul and Cruz, but they are among the GOP Senators LEAST likely to get the job.

Confusing post.

LBJ was Majority Leader OF the "US Senate."

I'm sorry he was tasked with actually governing and having to cut deals rather than smugly stating on the internet that he somehow wasn't a Republican.
Most hair-on-fire ideologues would not be able to recognize actual leadership if it walked up and introduced itself to them

They cannot see the big picture, because they focus on red-meat soundbites. They have the political understanding and sophistication of your average fence post.

As I have said, the GOP is a party that has two mindsets under its umbrella, both of which loathe the other one tremendously. The Dems don't have this. They goosestep like communist soldiers to almost everything together.
Both major "parties" are more coalitions than unified movements. The GOP has about 4-5 distinct blocs, and the Dems have more than a dozen. For some reason, the Dem leadership just does a better job of herding all its cats in the same general direction.

If you think Ted Cruz or Rand Paul could secure more than 10 votes in the conference you're dumb. Cruz would be lucky to get 2. But only if he got to vote for himself.

And neither of them want to be in a position where they would actually have to back their rhetoric up with action.
Cruz and Paul are "idea guys," and the GOP needs them. But the "idea guy" is seldom the right personality to handle the nuts and bolts of actual governance.

I don't think we're the one's missing the boat on McConnell. He has been controlled opposition for years and his, "working across the aisle" has allowed this country to slip further and further leftward. Of course you like him, he's the Washington Generals coach to your Globe Trotters. He actively worked against republican candidates in the midterms. And let's get something perfectly clear, his efforts on judicial appointments wasn't some great conservative movement on his part, it was a poke in Harry Reid's eye for his changing how appointments were approved and McConnell warned him about. It was his personal vendetta that happen to work out for Republicans. Let me help your leftist little mind out, there hasn't been any cooperation from the left for decades and the right needs to adopt the same tactic. This country is going to hell due to your brainwashed beliefs.

What was his famous quote, I'd rather govern from the minority than the majority?

Either one would be an excellent choice and a huge improvement.

....and neither will ever be in consideraton for that position because of that.

R's don't want somebody that might actually, at least on occasion, do R things. They want a middle of the road "don't make waves and agree to stuff" type. They want a jellyfish, but the kind of jellyfish that doesn't have the stinging tentacles.

What is actual governance by your estimation?

What good is compromise when the direction achieved negatively affects the country?

What is an idea guy and why would that dictate lack of success?

Is the goal purely and simply compromise?
