You know, the priest at our church just last week reiterated that 'we don't do fundraisers'. Because the role of the church is to serve the community, not require the communities aid to serve itself. So the church needs to fund itself and find its budget balance.

It was refreshing to hear. I do wish it was a message repeated by more in society. Stave off the gofundme mooching.

this before or after he passed the collection basket ?

Way after. But this priest is very upfront about money, but doesn't beg for it. Its in the bulletins every week that prayer, fasting and almsgiving are parts of participating in the church. No one is hunting people down for tithes, but you're expected to tithe to your ability, and participating in tithing is a requirement for church leadership or weighing in as a member on church financial matters.

I've seen all types of churches asking for money dynamics and I appreciate the head on approach the most.

We've got a guy at work who is always traveling with his son's baseball team, and they go all over--Arizona, Florida, Texas... He doesn't ask for money, but at the same time, I wonder how much he spends on it, and will it be worth it in the end? I believe much of travel ball is about parents trying to live through their children vicariously and hoping they can push their kids into the major leagues. Baseball is a great game, but it's being ruined for those kids who just want to have fun.

My kids are about that age and love baseball and softball. A lot of their friends have already jumped to travel ball. We've been looking into it and it gets quite expensive.
Starts at $180-350 per month
Plus uniform, helmet, bags exc.
Plus almost each year need a new bat. Good bats are $250-400. And yes they add 50+ feet to a hit.
Plus weekends out of town, hotel and eat outs
I'm sure there's more I'm leaving out. Needless to say we are holding out in rec league as long as possible but the end is looking near.

I take it this is for one of the few kids that she didn't abort? Because it would be really weird if her aborted kids played travel ball. Of course, the travel ball family budget doesn't need to be as big if you kill your kids before they are born.

My son plays travel hockey. I live in Florida.

Florida....hockey....ice fees, skates close to $1000, sticks over $300, the rest of the gear, tournaments in the northeast....you want to talk expensive? Lol, get out of here with baseball.

We've always, always paid our own way. If some of the ither team parents bring up fundraisers during the year we balk, and never ever approach other people, even relatives, about supporting our son's sports financially. But he's my only child and we can afford it. Its always been our position that if you can't afford it you shouldn't be playing at this level.

But what makes me really shake my head is the parents who pay for travel hockey meanwhile their kids stink. Like really stink and have no future playing the sport other than in a beer league in their 30's. These kids don't have their edges, don't grasp positions, can't complete a tape to tape pass to save their life. They should be in Rec league but their parents insist they play at this level, and the organizations in Florida are more than happy to take their money and give them a spot.

We're out of here after this season ends. My son will be playing up north in an academy next season. No NHL dreams, but he has set his goal on playing in college and he's putting in the work. But if he wasn't as skilled as he is we would have pulled him from travel long ago and put him in Rec.

Youth sports isn't what it was when I was growing up and its never going back. Its so much more involved that you really need to look hard at how skilled your kid really is, how much they really want it, how much effort they're putting into it, and how its affecting them. Are they still able to have a social life, or are they turning into anti-social weirdos? Are they learning life lessons, or just learning how to be entitled whiners? And grades? Heck, they better keep them up or they're not playing in any decent college.

TLDR version.....Milano's a d-bag for begging people to pay for her kid's sport.

You're right, since his odds are extremely slim he'll play beyond college he just needs to be busted down to Rec league now where the kids can barely stand up in skates.

Even though he was selected by USA Hockey to participate in their player development camp this spring which was invite only.

Even though he loves the sport, loves competing at a high level, and can compete at a high level, you're right, there really is no difference between him and teammates who can't skate more than 10 ft without losing the puck. We've clearly deluded ourselves just as much as the parents of those kids, who by the way while having Rec league skills also have to send their kid with another parent to tournaments because they can't afford to go themselves.

Lol, in your zeal to be self-righteous you didn't even really register my post. Go re-read it, then look in your own obviously extremely large mirror.

Clay's reaction to Alyssa Milano begging for money

She's estimated to be worth north of $10 million and is married to a very successful talent agent. These people are not hurting for money at all and are asking other people to foot the bill for their kid's travel ball? **** that mess. It is far to acceptable to just ask people for money in this country if even the top .1% are doing it.
As long as there are people willing to send money, this will continue.

Alyssa Milano's GoFundMe to seek donations pay for her son's baseball trip is the latest example of her inability to understand and apply rational and logical reasoning.

The GoFundMe is for the entire team, not just her kid.

Maybe the OTHER 15 kids on the team are NOT the offspring of multi-millionaires, and she is taking the lead on fundraising for the TEAM AS A WHOLE due to her name recognition?

No, you do not like her politics, so everything she does is wrong. Do you have any idea how childish that is?

My son played upper level travel baseball. Centered in Texas, playing tournaments in mostly the larger University campus fields, extending on to Louisiana and from there to Florida. Much better competition than regular high school as players were considered some of the best at their position on a regional level, and we made vacations out of the long trips. Good times and experiences. We were fortunate to have family in the areas of the tournaments of the Texas tournaments so travel expenses were lessened greatly and got to spend time with family, who in turn got to see some good baseball, so it worked out well for us. Made some good family friends along the way, who we are still in contact with and see sometimes and meet up with for good times.

With today's tech, my son keeps in touch with his old teammates, and sometimes hook up in person when available to do so.

So, this may not be the "traditional" aspect of travel ball, but milage may vary. Our milage was good.

I was heavily involved in high level recruiting. One of my favorite lines by parents funding nationally tour teams is all they are doing is a scholarship pre-payment program.

To her or the ones that will be "donating". She knows what she is doing and when people donate money for legal fees for murderers, that explains it all.

Yes, Milano should be ashamed of herself however, when has any liberal ever shown shame or honor.

However, the people that I put the blame on are the people that donate.

Those of us dads who have wives or children that compete in high level, but still amateur, equestrian events laugh at the cost complaints of team travel dads. With that being said and with all the kids grown now…we are very glad we created those memories with and for our kids. We were blessed to have that opportunity!

It's not fundraising. It's begging. Had two kids in extremely expensive travel sports. I would be mortified if some assclown parent on a team that my kid was a part of did this. Do you really think Milano has her kid playing with the poor kids?

Take your children outdoors. Go hunting, fishing, camping, hiking…maybe golf.
Team sports is a great way to bond with your children, but once they pass that stage in life it's over…. Thusly the end of that common bond.
I've seen it before with friends and family. Now that their children are in their twenties there's an obvious disconnect with the children.
Getting your children outdoors as a family is wholesome….it gets them away from the draw of "Gaming" in their rooms until 4am and sleeping all day while the rest of the free world is productive.

See, that was the response I was expecting and is typical of parents.

Unless your kid is making a living playing hockey, he is Rec. You can pay more and call it Club. Select... whatever you want.

I played football, baseball, soccer... many sports in college. I played on Olsen Field. Much of it was through Intramurals... that was what we called Rec in college. Was it Div-1? No. But it was a "high level."

Why can't we just celebrate kids going out and playing hockey regardless of their skill level and cherish they aren't playing video games?!

Get off your high horse. Kids want to compete at the highest level they are capable of. That's fun. If a parent can afford it and give them that opportunity, more power to them. Your crusade against it is weird.

Let's be honest - the only way she earned money before was by selling her body. Since no one wants to see that anymore, she needs to beg.
