I'm just small potatoes, but if I understand the situation correctly, pilot is probably doing pattern work and wants to simulate an unpowered landing for practice. He is requesting/letting her know his approach (final) will be short.

It seems she has no idea what that means, and google tells her that he is supposed to do a turn (base) where the runway numbers are. That's quite aggressive with or without engines if you're at pattern height. You'd have to get down extremely fast to turn base and then final and not overshoot the runway.

The idea that she says she expects him to land midfield is disturbing IMO. While that's doable, why would she assume he wants that?

More experienced pilots please correct if I'm wrong.

Wow, you know it's bad if it goes to this level.

Yet, incompetency stays in place...for some reason.

I used to do these and trained students but at uncontrolled airports. Cut the power at the numbers on downwind, turn and announce "close left base runway XX", then turn again and announce "short final runway XX". I have never flown into DTO and do not know how busy it gets, however flying these approaches at a controlled airport is probably going to be different because she is controlling other aircraft and, if he is doing something non-standard, she needs to know so she can space aircraft appropriately if there is more than light traffic. Otherwise, I think she is being a Karen.

Do those students train on how to land the plane? Or are they just interested in how to drive it through the sky?
