My son is a 6th grader. They have been tasked with doing a TED talk and they have been given the topics that have to speak on. They have been pretty much been told they have to do a talk on how the whole is going to end soon because of climate change. His topic is global ice melt and rising sea levels. He was told he has to talk about how we are all about to be under water. This has him very stressed out because we have been talking about the facts for so long.

First off I have to address this BS with my kids teachers in an email. I am sure this will stir the pot to begin with. Then I need to help my son do the necessary research to help him. I actually just got done reading Michael Shellenberger's book Apocalypse Never and I have also read Bjorn Lomborg's book False Alarm. That helps me, but now I have to communicate this to my son.

Does anybody have any resources or points I should concentrate on that shows how we are NOT going to become WaterWorld in a decade?

My kids go to a Boulder Valley School in Colorado. I know, I know... take them out, move them, home school them. I wish we could do one of these, but it really isn't a choice. My wife works in the district and makes it very difficult to just pull our kids. And this economy has kicked my ass and my company I own has gone to ***** So we don't just have a ton of money to put our kids in some Christian school. Sucks I know, I just need to help my son get through this BS assignment. I also want to teach my son a lesson about sticking to the truth using facts and citing sources. Even if sticking to the truth means becoming a disruptor.

Thanks and Gig em...

What an incredible learning opportunity for your child to learn a life lesson of growing importance. He will be a leader who shapes tomorrow.

Failing an assignment like this should be a badge of honor. Congrats on teaching principles and exposing your child to the truth of our society.

This sounds like a lesson on how to tell people what they want to hear, a valuable skill to have in life. In the professional world sometimes you have to stand up and say a bunch of things you don't believe with conviction. Giving a report on climate change is no biggie and making him research the other side's arguments (or lack of) will make him better informed.

Flashback... I went to Boulder Valley Schools from kindergarten through Grade 6. Moved to East Texas in 1971 for 7th grade. Talk about culture shock.

Sorry for the derail.

Have him turn it around into a good thing. Say something like "20,000 years ago, parts of this state were under several hundred meters of ice. Chicago was under 1-2 MILES of ice. We cannot let this happen again! What will we tell our future generations if we allow the return of the Laurentide Ice Sheet? Drill baby drill! "

Have him show pictures of Obama and Gores sea side McMansions and ask why they and all the other elites pushing this clearly aren't worried about losing their multi million dollar investments

Have him present information with sources from both sides of the argument. Then, at the end he can say "which truth do you believe?"

Just have your son play videos from another Boulder-ite, Tony Heller. He has done pretty good exposing the climate scam. I'm sure he has a few vids on the lack of ice melt and lack of sea level rise.

Bring in a big tub and put a huge block of ice in it. Then fill it up to the brim with water. Walk over to the teacher and say "I'll bet you $1,000 when this chunk of this ice melts, the tub won't overflow even though it was completely full when the ice was still frozen."

I love this idea!!!! I had thought about him talking about the over arching ice age and the ice withdraw.

I'd have him compile an exhaustive list of "expert" predictions on climate change that have proven false. There's a lot to choose from.

If the people who are telling us to worry about rising sea levels were actually worried about rising sea levels, they wouldn't live right next to the ocean. They would live in flyover country somewhere.

It's really that simple.

It's only high school, **** what the teacher thinks. Seriously. He has nothing to lose by stating what he actually believes.

Also, I would note many other theories that have proven to be ignorant/wrong throughout history.

Flat earth, over human populization, race superiority, etc. All of these were mainstream beliefs. Soon, theses theories will be in the same vein as anti-racism and climate change.

Challenge your son to give a speech on how there are real questions to the accuracy of climate change. And point out how controversial and scary it is to go against the mainstream... just as it was for people who believed the world was round hundreds of years ago.

Speaking the truth is scary, but say it anyways...

this is what I would do. Provide historical context of the ebbs and flows of ice growth and retraction prior to and after the presence of man.

If the earth self regulated previously how then could man be the cause of the regulation today.

The teacher might dock points for a poorly researched demonstration. At least as the theory goes, the main cause of sea level rise isn't the floating sea ice, it's the glacial ice sheets that sit on land.

Need to have a serious chat with the wife about getting out if a blue state, especially that deep of blue.

Your kid needs to know that the majority of his teachers will be Leftists and some of them will do unfair stuff like this. He has every right to stand up for himself and let them know that he will complete the assignment, but maybe not from the approach they're expecting. He'll learn more about leadership and critical thinking than this dumb project could ever hope to achieve.

Get out of Boulder.

This isn't the "gotcha" you think it is...the forecasted rise in sea levels over the next few decades is measured in inches not feet. Right or wrong, they are trying to consider the impact on future generations, but also understand they will die long before it becomes a concern (if it ever does).

I'm a global warming/climate change as the wackos present it is a hoax guy. I think climate change started on the day of creation and there's nothing we can do about it. I'm not a scientist but I don't think you thought the science out.

We have had this serious talk. We looked pretty seriously about moving to FL. She is from there, so I thought it would be a good compromise. Unfortunately she would have to take a HUGE pay cut and lose pretty much all of her expected retirement. It just doesn't make sense financially.

Have him do a talk about how it is much more urgent than anyone realizes. Have him talk about Al Gore's findings in 2008 about the ice caps melting and about how in only 5 years New York will be under water!!!!!!

I don't say this flippantly, but even with the sacrifices it would take, I think you'd look back 10 years from now and be glad you let your kid grow up not in Boulder. You're a good dad trying your best either way, though.

Here are a few recent publications from the Heartland Institute that you can download from the Internet...ought to get your son off to a good start.

http://heartland.org/wp-content/uploads/documents/SeaLevelRiseCCRII.pdf

https://heartland.org/wp-content/uploads/documents/Hedke%20Sea%20Level%20Rise%20Ten%20Cities.pdf

A word of warning: Global warming wackos usually cannot be reasoned with using actual data; their belief was not initially founded in logic but rather was based upon feelings/emotions, interpersonal relationships and/or some selfish interest such as political affiliation. People often feel a need to believe in a cause in order to find meaning in life, and consequently they are willing to believe in a theory in which they only know the name and not the underlying principles or foundation. So be wary. Vilfredo Pareto said it the best: "Men follow their sentiment and their self interests, but it pleases them to imagine that they follow reason. And so they look for, and always find, some theory which, a posteriori, makes their actions appear to be logical."

Years ago I fought the "climate wars" on internet forums and ended up being banned from the opinion pages of the New York Times and The Guardian...most liberals don't comprehend actual data and science.

Michael Crichton wrote the book 'State of Fear' about the global warming hysteria. He started off to write a book about how global warming was going to kill us all and had a different title in mind. After doing years of research for the book he changed his sentiment. He couldn't run from the data. He changed the entire plot of his book to be about climate terrorism. His book in many ways is prophetic. Throughout the book he debunks so many climate tropes. After he wrote the book he was ostracized from the Hollywood community. Sadly cancer took his life not too long afterwards. This is why I don't think you will find many more of his books adapted into movies.

He needs to know that sea levels have been at the current levels for something like 3,000 years.

They used to be several feet higher something until a cooling period about 8,000 years ago.

During the last glaciation, they were about 100 meters (roughly 325 feet) lower than now.

We may easily owe our civilization to a period when temperatures were warmer than they are today -- the Holocene Climatic Optimum.

It was during the Holocene Climatic Optimum that mankind started to be able to abandoned their wandering subsistence lifestyle and begin farming and begin taking their first steps toward civilization, something that would be very unlikely to happen if we maintained a subsistence lifestyle.

Not only that, at the start of the the Holocene Climatic Optimum, the hexaploid wheat that we have today that has enabled mankind to spread throughout the Earth did not exist. The wheats of that time were only the diploid and tetraploid wheats which did not spread as well. The hexaploid wheat would have been extremely unlikely to ever existed if some unknown farmer had not accidentally planted a tetraploid wheat with a related grass from which the wheat picked up an extra set of chromosomes to become the hexaploid wheat which is undoubtedly mankind's greatest unintended accomplishment. It is that hexaploid wheat that allowed mankind to spread out from those first small birthplaces of civilization throughout the world. Without it, civilization would have been a whole lot more difficult.
