Israel Executes Massive Bunker Buster Strike On Hezbollah Command Headquarters In Beirut
— The War Zone (@thewarzonewire) September 27, 2024
Israel targeted Hezbollah's leader in an unprecedented airstrike on a Beirut suburb.
Latest: https://t.co/6QiSF5tHGn
Comment:Quote:
Early accounts suggest the use of penetrating 'bunker buster' bombs or missiles in at least some of the airstrikes, which would make sense given the buried nature of the target as well as the large plumes of dark smoke.
Quote:
F-35s and F-15Is were the most likely platforms with the BLU-109 and GBU-28s being their most potent bunker busters. I'm shocked that building survived as long as it did. I wonder what will be Hezbollah's response. If Nasrallah died in the strike that could be a blow that might not be easily recoverable from..

My first thought. Things can only collapse into empty spaces.
It is complicated. Hezbollah has a fighting arm and a political one and they are sometimes in disagreement. Their political arm is more popular than their fighting one. Their fighting one (at least prior to the last few months) is more powerful than the Lebanese military by an order of magnitude.Ag In Ok said:
If the Lebanese army (not certain of its actual fighting strength) wanted to take control of the country, now would be the time. Hezbollah has set back Lebanon a few centuries, this could ignite a larger power shift in Lebanon knowing how crippled H is now.

Due to a complicated power-sharing system of government established by the Lebanese constitution, the government power is essentially evenly split between Sunni, Shia, and Christians. The military (by custom and agreement) is run by the Maronite Catholics (but consists of people of all faiths) and 85% of their equipment is American or European.
Most of the Sunni and Christian population would love to see Hezbollah eliminated but that doesn't mean they like Israel or would support Israeli action on Lebanese territory.
It's my personal belief (completely speculative) that elements of the Lebanese military are likely providing intelligence support for Israel with the help of the US. They cannot go public with this and must maintain an image of "anti-Israel aggression" to quell the less than 1/3 or so of the population who at least want the political branch of Hezbollah to remain a force in the country. The political branch of Hez is popular because they perform a lot of charitable acts, food distribution, etc.

Hezbollah also traffics drugs from South America, stolen autos, weapons, humans and launders cash through a network of overseas Lebanese businessmen. They even smuggled cigarettes here in the US from low tax North Carolina to small Middle Eastern-owned grocery stores in Michigan and New York, evading tobacco taxes in the northern states. In short, they are a crime syndicate which corrupts the places in which they operate, further funded by Iran, thanks to the cash grant by the Biden administration.
The Hezbollah terrorist leader Hassan Nasrallah will not make it to the end of the week. Mark my words.
