This is why there are no more small trucks (Hint, it's the government)

If you're like me, and wonder why small trucks today are bigger than 1/2 tons of 20 years ago, or why a half ton now is the size of a small house, here's why.

Here's the most Government thing you'll see today. EPA CAFE standards are what's driving trucks and SUVs to be bigger and bigger.

That doesn't make sense? Well, of course not, it's the government.

This should be no surprise to those of us who remember about 20 years ago, when the government would allow advanced depreciation on 3/4 trucks, but not on luxury cars. So what did the real estate agent do, who used to drive clients around in Cadillacs? They switched to 3/4 and 1 ton Suburbans.

tl/dr, (or too long didn't watch) the bigger "shadow" a truck casts, the lower the gas mileage standard.

Wheelbase x wheel track = shadow.

Fuel standards wreaked a lot of havoc with car companies. They made tons of little cars nobody wanted to help their averages. They classified the PT Cruiser as a "truck." Finally when the economics dictated they had to sell more big cars they bought offsets and introduced hybrids and such.

Ridiculous.
Trump will fix it.

When looking at government policy about anything, always remember a key question from California's new social Justice driven Math Excellence initiative:

Q: "Jose works hard for an hour and has $15.00. Sarah works hard for an hour and has another $15.00. Gavin doesn't work hard at all, so how much money does Gavin have?

A: All of it, since Jose and Sarah are taxpayers and Gavin is a public employee.

It's also why we're losing V8 muscle /pony cars. The CAFE standards punish them for their relatively small footprint while rewarding trucks and SUVs with similar fuel economy and emissions. Such bull*****!!

Yeah, CAFE's leniency towards "light trucks" is a hell of a perverse incentive.

Not coincidentally, pedestrian deaths from car crashes are at a 40-year high.

Awesome. One of my buddies had one of these when we were in college. We lived near a really steep railroad crossing and we'd get air in his Luv going over it. That dang thing took a beating and always held strong. That's a sweet Luv you have there.
Well, okay then

The guy with the for sale brodozer probably has more money tied up in his shock absorbers than you do in your entire truck.

My '69 F100 looked small next to a newer model. Miss that ol' truck. That little 240ci was a good engine...purred like a kitten.

My two sons drove the same 2004 Toyota Tacoma extra cab. Sold it for almost what I bought it for.

Should have never sold it. Should have kept and dropped a small block in it…

Going to have to disagree with you
The. Number of stay at home soccer moms that drive a suburban instead of a mini van means it is consumer preference

Last time I went truck shopping small trucks are only marginally cheaper than 1/2 ton trucks so unless you have to drive and park in urban areas
Most people will buy the full sized

I have a 302 but don't run it enough for it to ever run very well these days. No A/C and every suspension component worn out will cause that sort of thing.

I had 2 Ridgelines and liked them but taking oilfield customers out for lunch was difficult with how big those guys are. From now on I will only drive full size, it may be a while since they cost so freaking much now. You used to be able to get a decent crew cab truck for $25k, now it seems the are all $50k+

I drove 2 different Chevy S-10 pickups. Great little trucks. It was a shame when it was taken out of their lineup. I still find the newer Rangers quite hilarious in their beefed up state.

SAHM fall into one of two categories.
1) Married a very high wage earner
2) Terrible financial decision makers and are leveraged to the tops of their ears.

Three above two are not mutually exclusive. There's serious competition to keep up with the Jones who are likely also broke.

Thanks OP-

It's been killing me upgrading 1/2 ton trucks every 7-9 years and being stuck with only bigger options.

Today I'm in a 2018 I bought used because I refuse to drive the land barge that chevy is selling now. Also, no CD player?? WTH?

My grandpa racked up about 500k miles on an extra cab. That truck lasted forever. Borrowed it in college after my car died completely and i wanted to buy it off of him after i was done with it. Loved that truck.

Quote:

When the European Economic Community raised tariffs on imported chicken from the U.S., President Lyndon Johnson retaliated with a 25% "chicken tax" on imported trucks and other items. The tariff was originally aimed at vehicles made by Volkswagen in West Germany, but even though the original issue over chickens has been resolved, and Germany no longer makes light trucks for the U.S. market, the tariff remains in place out of political inertia.
