$250,000 for a one way trip in a submersible.

$88,000 to stay at home and have to keep paying bills.

Life is expensive.

Based on those numbers, life is cheaper than death.

One is a one time payment.
The other is a setup fee with a recurring daily payment.

wow. the reason they use text communications instead of voice is b/c the CEO got tired of the surface ship interrupting his dives with requests for updates. He basically wanted to dive in peace and quiet, so he opted for text communications only.

OceanGate as an entity seems to have shut down very swiftly. Any website links are dead, and signs have been pulled down from the space the company leased in Washington state. As far as holding people accountable, the main person to go after died in his own death trap. I assume he was at least smart enough to isolate the rest of his personal fortune from the OceanGate business.

Honestly, with all the hate people spew online and in real life these days, it's not surprising.
Trump will fix it.

Yep.

Guy made an unclassed unregulated sub which he is entitled to do.

He did it using technical staff that had little technical expertise in that or really any field, which he is entitled to do.

Lots of smart people and experts in the field told him he was making very bad design choices and he ignored them which he is entitled to do.

He conned lots of rich people to pay him to ride in it which everyone involved is entitled to do.

It had the expected catastrophic failure.

You can't regulate stupidity. Some people want to find expensive and creative ways to die and you can't regulate that either. Move along.

I would argue that he is not entitled to do all of that. He offered the tours as a publicly available service. Once you do that there is an obligation to ensure that the equipment is designed and operated with public safety as the first priority. Ask any PE registered in any state, and they will tell you that. As d-bag legal tactic he made all the tourist "crew members" as if they were now responsible for their own safety and the proper operation of the vessel. In that case he now opens himself up to OSHA realm since he didn't ensure the safety of his workers. That release they signed acknowledging the risks wasn't worth wiping your ass with.

Sure he's dead now, but there will be a long list of other people who will get included in the lawsuit.

It's against the law to build a experimental aircraft and then sell rides on it, right?

Something like that needs to be applied to sea vessels.

If that is the case I am having flashbacks to the Bonfire accident. Texas Board of Professional Engineers was part of the investigation on that too. It didn't help that Ray Bowen was a PE.

UW has already stated they had no involvement.

This guy probably sent an email to someone at UW and got a response. Then claimed collaboration. Just like buying carbon fiber from Boeing that Boeing could no longer use and claiming he's working with them, too.

I don't see how that will stand up. Just because it is no longer within specs for Boeing doesn't mean it's not good for other uses that don't involve aircraft.

Does Boeing have a responsibility to look into what everything they auction off goes on to do? That is a horrible precedent.

The irony of this entire event will be that people were willing to spend $250,000 just to see the Titanic in person and view the ship and it's priceless artifacts at the bottom of the ocean. And at some point in the near future the most valuable item at the wreck site if ever recovered will be that Logitech controller or the Camper World light.

I agree. I didn't say it would work, I just said someone will try. Boeing obviously has lower tolerances than the manufacturer and I am certain their shelf life is shorter than the manufacturer.

Not a competent or ethical one. In Texas the State Board can still go after non-PEs for practicing without a registration or putting public safety at risk.

The binding matrix.

Generally something like a 2-part with a resin and a hardener. Those don't stay good forever, but like I said. Just because they are out of spec for Boeing, Schwinn might still be able to use them.
