My thoughts?

1. This thing collapsed in on itself and is sitting at the bottom of the ocean.

Or

2. They drifted a long distance and are currently sitting trapped on the surface somewhere.

Obviously I want them rescued but they made the idiotic decision to do this.

If they are on the surface, it can only be unsealed from the outside, correct? So they would still be reliant on the small oxygen supply?

Yes. The only way in or out is through the front viewport, which is bolted shut with no release from the inside. That also means there is no docking collar, and therefore no way for another submersible to rescue anyone at depth anyway. Literally a sealed coffin at this point. Stupidity all around.

Has it been discussed how many times this thing actually made a successful voyage down to the wreck? I've read expeditions are 5 days and they might only make it down once or twice...or zero. And it apparently was not uncommon for it to get lost for hours at a time.

Has it successfully made it down 5 times? 10? 20?

It's not made it once. This was the first try. The previous "test" only went down to 3000m with only the CEO. So they have never tested the hull integrity beyond 3000m and the Titanic wreck is beyond that.

I believe I heard that it has successfully made it to Titanic 3 times. Not sure in what time frame.

ETA: The CBS reporter who did the package for CBS This Morning was on one of them.

Yes, that was last year.

This was supposedly the first and only attempt in 2023.

Last November. Same sub. Toured titanic. A CBS reporter was on board.

It has definitely made it a few times.

The reporter and Spanish banker lady made it last year.

Also, someone showed the video of the hefty young lady earlier this morning and she apparently made it as well as she was not with the reporter on the CBS video.

So at least 2 times previously....

Hate to be morbid but if there's no catastrophic failure with the hull and they just run out of oxygen. How long would their bodies be preserved in this tin can?

God that would be creepy to peer through the viewport and just see them there years later.

Without heat and temperatures near or below freezing, I imagine they will be quite well preserved.

The CBS reporter only went down 37 feet. He even admits that was it and they aborted.

This, unless we had live firearms on the submersible and not on the space ship. Then I'd much rather be in a submersible.

It took them 3 tries. They had a technical difficulty on the attempt you're talking about, and they had to wait out some weather, but they did make it down with the reporter on board.

See for yourself.

Good lord folks, the CBS Sunday Morning video is linked on this thread and barely 10 minutes long.

Since the misinformation folks in this mornings folks are too busy to watch, here is a link to them being down on the Titanic in the submersible.

I'd imagine they hope it could go down and somehow attach a cable to the Titan and have it hauled up

A very neat and not well known but of American deep sea operations was project Azorian where we were able to retrieve a large section of a Russian nuclear sub that sank in the Pacific in the 70s. Granted the whole Project also took like 6 or 7 years from inception to execution. The sun was almost 3 miles down.
Yes, but that was a nearly decade long hundred billion dollar project in todays dollars….run by elite 50 year old white dudes, that failed to recover much of the sub.

This wouldnt be secret and much smaller, but the details of that project illustrate the difficulties

They lost communication with the surface during the dive that made it down to the Titantic right?

Sorry I can't watch the video right now.

That's true. There was a point in one trip...before the reporter took his...where they were just adrift for 2 1/2 hours, according to one of the passengers.

I think it typically lost communication. The guy in the story below went down last year and noted lost comms on 3 trips.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/titanic-tourist-says-submarine-lost-30278812

You can think of the communication system I previously linked as an old dial-up modem. I mean the really old one, like the one you took the headset and placed on cradle and got like 9600 baud. See below.

"Stockton Rush plans to return to the wreck this summer"

Posted 6 months ago. Oof.

So Im assuming that with the champagne pop this was the maiden voyage? And this summer is ....now? So likely only 1 successful mission prior to this current expedition, based on what I can tell. Maybe 1 or 2 before that. I doubt CBS let this guy go on this thing without at least 1 or 2 examples that it wouldnt instantly kill their reporter.

I've only been lightly following this story as I think it is sad but not really something that matters much in the grand scheme. I look at it the same way as doing any other risky activity and think it is cool but dangerous and sometimes that ends badly. Hope they somehow are saved, just a terrible way to die.

That said, has it been mentioned that it would seem a basic safety measure would be to simply connect the sub to a cable to begin with? I mean they aren't going inside the hull of the Titanic and you could always set it up to cut away if need be. It just seems like a cable would allow for them to be pulled to the surface pretty easily in a circumstance like this and they aren't going to go that far from the ship. It would certainly need to be a very long cable but not especially thick, just strong. That would have made all of this moot.

The thing about cables is, the stronger they are, the thicker they are.
Sub weighs 23,000 pounds and if it's where they think it is, it's over two miles down. That's a ****load of heavy cable.

Let's say they find it, right now and have signs the people are still alive...

Can somebody manage fabricating a giant crane game claw in 16 hours to get it to the surface? And if so, will they immediately drill an air hole?

Is there anything on the sub that can be grabbed on to? Drag an anchor and hope it hooks a side rail without puncturing into the inside?

If they realize there is no hope for getting it up, do they drop explosives to make it a more humane death?

So this submarine just broke under water and can't come back up to the surface? or did it get stuck in wreckage?

So, does the USCG have a winch and 12,000 feet of cable to pull it up?

What are the options IF they find it in the next few hours?
