They didn't report the sub missing until 8 hours after its last ping. Was that when it was supposed to resurface? Doesn't sound like they had a good emergency.

"A former employee of OceanGate, the company whose submersible is now missing after diving toward the wreckage of the Titanic, warned in 2018 that the sub's safety could be compromised by poor "quality control and safety" protocols that "paying passengers would not be aware" of, a lawsuit says.

David Lochridge, OceanGate's former director of marine operations, alleged in August 2018 court filings that he was wrongfully terminated after raising concerns about the company's "refusal to conduct critical, non-destructive testing of the experimental design" of the Titan, the submersible that went missing Sunday.

The filings say that after OceanGate's CEO, Stockton Rush, asked Lochridge to do a quality inspection of the submersible, Lochridge developed grave concerns about a "lack of non-destructive testing performed on the hull of the Titan."

While completing the inspection, Lochridge said, he asked coworkers if anyone had formally scanned the materials being used to secure the vessel from the high-pressure environment. Lochridge said he was told that no such scans had been done; instead, he said, sound-based systems would check for flaws in the hull in real time in order to detect issues."

Wow, what a clown operation.

Not much detail in that, but looks like they were using Acoustic Emissions and maybe more conventional NDE was not used? To say it's related to the current failure would be pure speculation at this point. I'd be surprised if there wasn't an actual pressure/submersion test performed.

I also wonder this. If you have oxygen for 96 hours for five people, does someone lose it and start axing people to elongate that timeline?

I would expect to be seeing the term "ROV" much more than "submersible" with regards to deep sea search and rescue. No way anyone is sending humans back down anytime soon.

I don't care if you are someone like Dan who performs well in high pressure situations. Eddie Aikau would NOT go, neither should anyone else.

Per the video on this thread that was just what Oceangate claimed. That does not appear to be a tested or verified claim

can you imagine being stuck inside that thing and the panic that is ensuing with the people on board once they realized they were all screwed. Esp. if they're still alive and drifting with 96-hours of O2 to live (or whatever it is).

Yep. Good judgment comes from experience, but experience comes from bad judgment. Unlike marketing light beer, people can die from bad judgment when flying or diving is involved.

The viewport manufacturer would only certify to 1300m instead of the 4000m required because of the way the sub was constructed.

I would assume maybe they saw the glass crack and then milliseconds later were instantly killed.

I can't imagine one scenario where the crew on this submersible can be rescued. There are only a handful of submersibles in the world that can get to that depth and even if they locate the Titan and send another submersible down to it there isn't a thing that can be done. Another craft can't tow it back to the surface so if the Titan has no power and can't drop ballast it's stuck there anyway.

I read that this company schedules 5 dives in a week on these tours and typically only 1 in 5 make it down to the Titanic. The other attempts are either aborted due to an equipment failure or weather or they go down and can't locate the wreckage.

Some day we will likely see footage of this submersible tangled up in the Titanic wreckage but it's likely never coming back up to the surface.
