Israeli tech sleuths uncover pro-Trump bot network swarming presidential rivals

Cyabra researchers identify 3 networks of potentially hundreds of thousands of fake accounts criticizing DeSantis and Haley, in manipulation of mainstream US Republican sentiment
By DAVID KLEPPER 6 March 2023,

WASHINGTON (AP) Over the past 11 months, someone created thousands of fake, automated Twitter accounts perhaps hundreds of thousands of them to offer a stream of praise for Donald Trump.

Besides posting adoring words about the former president, the fake accounts ridiculed Trump's critics from both parties and attacked Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and UN ambassador who is challenging her onetime boss for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

When it came to Ron DeSantis, the bots aggressively suggested that the Florida governor couldn't beat Trump, but would be a great running mate. As Republican voters size up their candidates for 2024, whoever created the bot network is seeking to put a thumb on the scale, using online manipulation techniques pioneered by the Kremlin to sway the digital platform conversation about candidates while exploiting Twitter's algorithms to maximize their reach.

The sprawling bot network was uncovered by researchers at Cyabra, an Israeli tech firm that shared its findings with The Associated Press. While the identity of those behind the network of fake accounts is unknown, Cyabra's analysts determined that it was likely created within the US.

"One account will say, 'Biden is trying to take our guns; Trump was the best,' and another will say, 'Jan. 6 was a lie and Trump was innocent,'" said Jules Gross, the Cyabra engineer who first discovered the network. "Those voices are not people. For the sake of democracy, I want people to know this is happening."

Bots, as they are commonly called, are fake, automated accounts that became notoriously well-known after Russia employed them in an effort to meddle in the 2016 election. While big tech companies have improved their detection of fake accounts, the network identified by Cyabra shows they remain a potent force in shaping online political discussion.

The new pro-Trump network is actually three different networks of Twitter accounts, all created in huge batches in April, October, and November 2022. In all, researchers believe hundreds of thousands of accounts could be involved.

The accounts all feature personal photos of the alleged account holder as well as a name. Some of the accounts posted their own content, often in reply to real users, while others reposted content from real users, helping to amplify it further. "McConnell… Traitor!" wrote one of the accounts, in response to an article in a conservative publication about GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell, one of several Republican critics of Trump targeted by the network.

One way of gauging the impact of bots is to measure the percentage of posts about any given topic generated by accounts that appear to be fake. The percentage for typical online debates is often in the low single digits. Twitter itself has said that less than 5% of its active daily users are fake or spam accounts.

When Cyabra researchers examined negative posts about specific Trump critics, however, they found far higher levels of inauthenticity. Nearly three-fourths of the negative posts about Haley, for example, were traced back to fake accounts.

The network also helped popularize a call for DeSantis to join Trump as his vice presidential running mate an outcome that would serve Trump well and allow him to avoid a potentially bitter matchup if DeSantis enters the race. The same network of accounts shared overwhelmingly positive content about Trump and contributed to an overall false picture of his support online, researchers found.

"Our understanding of what is mainstream Republican sentiment for 2024 is being manipulated by the prevalence of bots online," the Cyabra researchers concluded.

The triple network was discovered after Gross analyzed tweets about different national political figures and noticed that many of the accounts posting the content were created on the same day. Most of the accounts remain active, though they have relatively modest numbers of followers.

A message left with a spokesman for Trump's campaign was not immediately returned.

Most bots aren't designed to persuade people, but to amplify certain content so more people see it, according to Samuel Woolley, a professor and misinformation researcher at the University of Texas whose most recent book focuses on automated propaganda. When a human user sees a hashtag or piece of content from a bot and reposts it, they're doing the network's job for it, and also sending a signal to Twitter's algorithms to boost the spread of the content further.

Bots can also succeed in convincing people that a candidate or idea is more or less popular than the reality, he said. More pro-Trump bots can lead to people overstating his popularity overall, for example.

Trump has likely millions of bots praising him

In 2020, Trump was the first president since Herbert Hoover in 1932 to lose reelection, the House and the Senate.

It's rare for modern presidents to lose reelection in the first place, but to lose all levers of power is an unprecedented level of failure.

Since Hoover in 1932, only two elected presidents have run for and lost a second term: Jimmy Carter lost to the greatest President of the 20th century Ronald Reagan

and George H.W. Bush was undercut by another narcissistic billionaire businessman Ross Perot.

1. Trump did include it in his budget previously, as had been pumped by previous administrations,.
2. Nevada's congressional representation opposed it
3. Trump listened to them
4. Trump made the decision to not funding

So, Trump did not fund it.

I don't know how Trump can possibly be up so much with how ridiculous he acts.
I'll say it again, people aren't paying attention yet. We get worked up over all of this and see all the gaffes. 70-80% of the Primary voters still have a very cursory feel for anything going on in the horse race. A lot of people just don't like thinking about politics and so they simply don't get into it until it's election season.

That's why these polls are such a bad way of trying to gauge where things stand, especially a national poll where you are mixing in someone who will vote in January with someone who will vote in May and giving them equal weight. Those first primaries change everything because candidates get momentum and most of the candidates are gone by South Carolina.

This is especially true in a case like this where you have a guy like Trump that most Republicans have positive feelings for. Could be how much better the country was Pre Covid. Could be the indictments and sympathy vote. Of course a combo is the most common. Still in spite of what many Trump folks might want you to believe most people DGAF about the "Star Power" thing and the big rallies and the outrageous stuff. That's all secondary. They want you to think that is the key to his power because they know no one will ever be the personality Trump is but in the end people aren't voting for who is the more fun candidate.

Patience is the most difficult part of the political process but it has rewards.

Both of Tennessee's senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty have joyfully endorsed Donald Trump for president in 2024. Trump's current indictment by the Department of Justice does not bother them.

Seven of the eight GOP House members from Tennessee have also backed Trump. Tim Burchett, however, whose voting record has aligned with Trump, has so far declined to endorse Trump for president in 2024.

Former Gov. Bill Haslam is backing South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott. Former senators Lamar Alexander, Bill Frist and Bob Corker have not endorsed anyone for president, nor has Gov. Bill Lee.

Therefore, it was a surprise to learn that the Tennessee Republican Party secured Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the keynote speaker at its annual Statesmen's Dinner on July 15. He is Trump's principal opponent. Trump dislikes him and calls him Ron DeSanctimonious a childish cheap shot.

Trump is no doubt irked that his Tennessee congressional backers apparently were not able to prevent DeSantis from having this honor, which places him in front of key Republicans from across Tennessee. Or perhaps they did not know about it until after it was announced.

The interesting news was DeSantis deciding to skip Turning Point and Trump is so far skipping the Blaze with Tucker Carlson. Personally I would rather DeSantis go to TP and get booed and just smile and talk policy, I think that would be a disaster for folks like Charlie Kirk more than skipping. Reality is though TP has turned into a Trump rally organization and any money they are making is going to favor Trump most likely. Kirk really made a bad choice in selling out so badly to Trump. Logistically it would be challenging but doable for DeSantis with one event in Iowa and the other in South Florida, still these are events he has to be on top of his game.

The Blaze/Tucker event though is the one people will want to see. Tucker talking to GOP candidates is going to be great content and honestly I can't wait. I think it will dwarf any other events in short term importance. Trump is kind of stuck because if he goes then he is also dissing Kirk which he can't do.

Just a lot of chess pieces moving and those are just the ones we can see, I have no doubt a lot more is going on behind the scenes. That doesn't even touch on all the other candidates.

Wait. There have been tons of polls posted here by DeSantis fans. I thought that was the standiard for evidence.

Willing to bet Trump would have wanted a cut of the fundraising and DeSantis doesn't.

Quote:

This has all the earmarks of "better ground game". Have your biweekly rally if you want, but grinding it out in the trenches is how you overtake "front-runners".
Donald Trump holds 49-point lead over Ron DeSantis in Tennessee
Quote:

Former President Donald Trump is projected to win the Republican nomination for president by a landslide in Tennessee next year, with a 49-point lead over challenger Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) as of June.

A new poll released this week by the Beacon Center showed Trump dominating the southern state with 61% of the vote over DeSantis's 12%, and Trump beating President Joe Biden in a 2024 matchup in the state by more than 20 points.
Seems while the RINOs want their power back, the voters don't want to give it back to them in Tennessee.
LOL at the troll! I don't care what state you are referring to. Any poll that has ANY Republican with a 20point lead over Biden is trash. There are too many leftists that worship at the altar of government for that to be even a remote possibility

Staff needs to ban this LarryElder sock/troll account. Contributes nothing but the same idiotic comments over and over.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Every time I post a poll I put out the disclaimer that I think it is still fairly meaningless at this point.

BTW, if you would stop with the "laugh/cry" emoji at every response it would certainly enhance the conversation. It's just annoying and it takes away from any credibility you might have. I actually enjoy engaging with Trump supporters to discuss issues and politics but by doing that it is getting disrespectful. If you want to go and just troll then there are plenty of other places on the internet to go and many LOVE them some Trump. I'd rather you just make good arguments and stop trying to goad people into responding back in anger at you with that emoji though.

Your call.
