Way too many folks here are getting caught up in the moment. DeSantis is playing the long game while Trump is going for the knockout punch. Everything about DeSantis' campaign is centered on building momentum for when it counts not trying to win the election 8 months before a Primary vote while Trump is doing the opposite. Why?

Trump HAS to put DeSantis away. I would be shocked at his next Finance disclosure if he isn't shockingly low on funds and he is about to have to defend 4 separate legal matters simultaneously. They know they can't afford a long primary fight with DeSantis and they can only have a chance if they can dispense with him early and force his donors and supporters to choose him because they have no choice. Trump has lost all the big money that used to back him and his small money donors are getting tapped out. It's just not there. Trump is talking about ground game/ballot harvesting but he has done nothing and he won't have the money unless others give it to him or do it for him. The other problem with this is Trump is making a lot of unforced errors. The Fauci/vax stuff. The Baier interview. Yesterday praising how Lindsay Graham is very conservative. He's getting away with it to an extent but damn he is undisciplined and running a clown show. It's evident he is thinking that what he sees on Truth Social is the real world.

DeSantis knows this and is planning accordingly. He has raised stupid amounts of money and is continuing to do so. He's running a very efficient campaign and investing heavily in his ground game. He's also refining his stump speech. If you watch him he has been selective in who he is talking to and how he is talking. He intentionally uses notes instead of a teleprompter and he is referring to his notes less and less. That's because he wants to have it all completely down and then be able to add or improvise off of it without making a mistake. He now is taking more audience questions. He's going to start doing interviews with harder interviewers and different formats. That's not because he can't handle it now it's that he knows a few bad sound bytes can kill him. He is being very strategic and setting up to peak at the right time and that time is certainly not now.

That's all frustrating to most people watching all of this because they want to act like we are in the heat of the primaries but we just aren't. We are still in the opening battles and still a couple months from even the first debate.

Don't forget Trump has the media 100% on his side. They want him as the nominee because it means ratings, and it means the Democrats will sweep the general election.

Hell, Fox's latest headline is that the voters have spoken, Trump is the nominee.

I guess I miss when everyone got to actually vote.

It'd be nice to see movement towards DeSantis nationally, but the only thing that matters is Iowa and New Hampshire, especially with them being so early. That should clearly weed out the pretenders and give him a bump nationally. By that time, we should people coalesce around DeSantis by SC, NV, and Super Tuesday.

To be fair, being unquestionably more unwelcoming to illegal immigrants plays a part in that. More deportations tends to just mean you caught more of a large influx.

There are only two things larger than his ego:

1. BHOs ego
2. The list of promises/things he did not accomplish the first time around

Ttere certainly was not a decrease in numbers that matched with the number of deportations.

The #1 reason is non-cooperation from states and local governments. Is that Trump's fault? Of course not!

But it's just one more example of the fallacy of this "prove warrior" line.

Trump is the only person who could make people who claim to be conservatives suddenly think the Washington Post is a bastion of virtue and honest reporting.
