Proficient to the point where they can speak conversationally and academically. C1 or C2 on the CEFR.

For all you "defund the schools" / "privatize education" people, especially those with an "AG" tag next to your name, does your disdain for public education end at 12th grade?

No. I'm a public school product. Grade school through two A&M degrees. I have disdain for the current public education system at every level.

It sounds like the B2 level would be more than sufficient for what you want.

I hope you also want native English speakers to become equally proficient in a foreign language.

We do have a cell phone policy. Each teacher manages it the way they want, within reason.

Banning cellphones won't solve the problem. It will just make it more difficult for teachers to manage because kids will hide them. Teachers that can't manage cell phones can't manage other behaviors as well.

It's like one chapter in Home EC. Im talking about an actual financial literacy course that teaches you basic money theory all the way to investing in stocks, bonds, and real estate.

And definitely include the history of money and what a fiat currency is.

Everyone should be educated on the make-believe nature of the federal reserve Ned the US dollar.

That alone would scare the **** out if everyone and hopefully wake up our country.

I encourage all HS students to learn another language. They won't be required to be as proficient in that other language to be successful in the US like English.

So no, I wouldn't require that.

I never said they didn't try. English proficiency should be a graduation requirement.

Well, we should have an official language, it should be English, and children should be required to learn it. English is the single most important language one can know. It's the de facto international language of business. If we want all Americans to succeed.; how can we neglect this part of their education?
Well, most schools attempt to help non-native speakers become English speakers.

Learning a language other than english is great and should be encouraged but knowing english is by far more important in t he US. I've traveled all over the world and you can always find an English speaker when struggling with the native language. The reverse is not nearly as prevalent.

Knowing English is a difference maker all over the world. Given that it is the most widely spoken language in the US we should require all students to be proficient at it. Doing less is a disservice to the kids. Think of the children.

The problem with schools as rest of America is that nobody's yes means yes and nobody's no means no. Everything is in gray area, everything is maybe, until the bosses figure out what's best for them and not lose their job. Kids have learning disability? Good, put him in special ed, let him learn there. Parents should accept the "no" your kid can't be in same classes as the sled dogs. Parents raise hell, so special ed kid is put in regular class. Kid can't learn, teacher has to modify, sled dogs slow down. Same with language barriers. Learn the language, smart kids go with sled dogs. Otherwise stay in modified classes.
Another thought - do any of you believe in the gene pool? Would kids of low IQ parents have low IQ kids?
Who is doing all the breeding these days?
Not talking poor kids - they can and do overcome. But are all kids equal from birth? Does the slogan "all kids can learn" mean all kids can learn Calculus, or all kids can learn what they are capable of learning?

I see this from two perspectives. One as a teacher who has had kids in a physics class that could not pass algebra one. Secondly as a dad with a daughter who has severe Dyslexia. A daughter who could not functionally read until 5th grade. A Daughter that now as a Sophomore in High School is 2nd in her class. A daughter who has busted her ass to overcome a lot. But you in would have relegated her to..... where? because she was not a "sled dog"

Now I do agree with different learning paths. Not every kid should be in physics or calculus, hell not every kid should be forced to take algebra. After 8th grade there should be two paths, academic and trade. Kids that are nothing but trouble should be removed and not hurt others chances, BUT there are greys. Being sanctimonious will not help. Because while your Johnnie or Sally was breezing through those easy readers my daughter was fighting, crying, and never giving up. You (and probably 3/4 of the people here) would not have thought she deserved an education.

You do realize there are only so many days in the year and most kids won't pay attention to that lesson, right? Most aren't mature enough to care about that.

Congrats to your daughter! She overcame through hard work and I Betcha she had plenty help from you parents
And did not expect to be gifted a seat in the class for peer reasons. Has she exited the dyslexia program?
Dyslexic kids are not dumb- teachers can identify them
Now easier and get them help, while a kid with a low mental capacity cannot overcome.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret.

I'm Puerto Rican and I assure you, there is an island of over 3 Million Americans who are doing just fine without speaking much English and in some cases, none at all.

Bad Bunny can't speak English worth a damn and he's selling out stadiums charging hundreds of dollars per ticket. I paid $250/seat to see him at Minute Maid Park in September 2022. That was the loudest concert or event of any kind I've ever been to. We're talking Beatles on Ed Sullivan levels of screaming.

And if selling out stadiums isn't enough, Bad Bunny is also dating Kendall Jenner. Player.

I currently live in Los Angeles and my dentist is in Koreatown. I assure you that there is an entire culture of Koreans in LA who are doing just fine reading Hangul.

Same goes for Chinese in Arcadia, Armenians in Glendale and Hebrew speakers between La Brea and Fairfax.

Now if you want more opportunities, yeah, it is definitely in your best interest to learn English but it is by no means a requirement nor should it be. Otherwise the Framers would have written it into the Constitution.

Here's a little something from my home island for you to enjoy.
(looks like they could have filmed this in my hometown)

This kind of thinking results in homelessness and welfare....another thing for which your little corner of the world is famous. I do lots of business in PR and, even though I know Spanish, I never need to speak it. Then again. I'm not dealing with poor people. But, that's my whole point, we should make Americsn kids learn English to maximize their shot at prosperity.

I never made any blanket claims that success is impossible without knowing English but your response seems to indicate that you think that's what I meant.

But. By all means, you are entitled yo your opinion that we should not expect too much from ESl kids. They should just aspire to be Bad Bumny.

Well yeah but, I think they should all aspire to be Roberto Clemente first.

Where I live in Los Angeles yes, the homelessness problem was already ridiculous ten years ago and it has skyrocketed since then.

If you take a look at who the homeless are, they're regular White Americans who speak English just fine. There are a few Blacks. I've never seen a homeless Korean, Armenian, Chinese, Filipino and sure as hell no homeless Mexicans. They're the ones who are here to work and make money. Kind of ironic that it's the regular born Americans who are homeless.

There's also something to be said for the family unit and multi-generational relationships that go along with these cultures who don't speak a lot of English.
