Don't know what Boomers you deal with, but the ones I know - Dad, uncle, etc. - are the smartest people I know. They just know how to do literally everything. I pride myself in trying to always be learning and doing things myself, but I still routinely have to call them up to ask how to do something.

I don't understand the stress of skilled labor retiring. Could it be painful? Sure. But with capitalism, companies who perform will be pushed to the top and those that can't, won't.

"Company XYZ has performed well on our last few contracts, lets give them more business."

Wait until you're in a company that needs talent to operate. Like you said, some companies just may not be viable due to lack of talent.

Lack of talented workforce stifles innovation.

They don't care about talent, they care about DE&I in order to keep the blackrock money flowing in. The whole point is to destroy the US economy.

What's the point about assigning blame ? If you take all of the boomers out and shoot them it doesn't solve the problem. What to do now should be the focus.

Labor shortages only exist because the pay sucks. Who wants a life doing hard/technical work only to live in poverty?
They're not talking about a labor shortage, they're talking about intelligence and work ethic. They're talking about how DEI leads to the hiring and promotion of lesser-qualified candidates, logically leading to lower performance and efficiency.

Hard work doesn't pay poverty-level wages. Really doing ANYTHING full-time at today's hourly wages should be enough to support yourself. Minimum-wage jobs aren't for trying to raise and family and purchase a home.

The problem is our educational system doesn't do a good of training people for careers. The whole 4-year college system is a bloated mess that students are encouraged to enter.

Future pilots should have opportunity to attend pilot training school out of high school and complete flying hours at not an insane cost (possible option: give back of % of future earnings for period of time in exchange for a spot)..

It's not just pilots- across numerous in-demand categories it's not made accessible enough to fill positions:

Example: Many more spots should be made available for future MDs. It's a joke how hard it is to actually see a physician these days for something routine. Create many more residency spots and get those positions filled. It's not freaking rocket science.

I think back to the snowmageddon event of 2020. A number of people had their food spoil because they left it in the fridge and it got too hot without electricity. (ever think about putting it outside where it was below freezing). Still others had pipes burst and didn't know how to turn off their water at the meter so they just sat in the flood because plumbers couldn't get there.

When bad times hit America I think the stupid people will die off pretty quick and the rest of us can thrive after a few weeks.

Yeah, I just love all the blanket boomer hate. This boomer raised a veterinarian and a computer science grad. The vet was easy, she always wanted that from early on. Our son failed out the first go round and thought he could get a job anyway even without a degree. That went nowhere of course because the market was so flooded with CS grads, he never sniffed a look. We asked him what other interest he had because calculus was kicking his ass and he said Archaeology. That took all of two minutes of a google search to show him available jobs and what a terrible decision that would be since he was never the professor type.

Fortunately he got back on the horse, graduated, and has a great job he is over 5 years in on. This same flunkee borrowed my tools and completed a brake job on his maxima because it was going to cost too much based on the estimate he got and seemed fairly easy to do based on DYI videos. He fixes stuff around his house and usually I get a call or pictures he is trying to figure out. About the only thing he needs help with are old man experience short cuts for things like plumbing connections and lawn maintenance/equipment repair.

Plenty of good boomers that haven't ruined the world for the snowflakes who can't look in the mirror and accept failing at a task much less even trying to figure it out.

This is the most insanely naive and stupid garbage I have seen in quite some time. Are they perfect, no. But be careful what you wish for.

I know you probably want the democrat/socialist utopia your limp wristed low-T professors and idols like Don Lemon have raved about...wish I could be there to see the look on your face after this country collapses and you realize you were conned as you long for the amazing 2020's, which are never coming back.

Engineering is only as good as the ability to properly install and operate it.

Yes, you are in the exception category. So is my Dad. My parents raised 4 successful kids, 2 engineers, a vet and a pharmacist. My Dad taught us how to do all sorts of things and, more importantly, taught us how to figure out the things we didn't know how to do.

I am the exception in most people I know on being able to fix things. I always get asked, How do you know how to do that? At 39, I've become "that guy" on the street that knows how to do everything and neighbors ask for advice or help. I've saved a lot of people money by telling them how easy to fix small things when they were about to call someone to fix. You can ask my wife, it drives me nuts how completely clueless most people are with even basic things.

Far too many boomers raised snowflakes who don't know how to do anything.

I've read most of this thread, started skimming towards the end.

As a person squarely in the middle of Gen X, I gotta tell ya' that not only am I sick and tired of the youngsters crapping all over the Baby Boomers, but their incessant continuation of it is one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen. It's a perfect example of everything that's wrong with THEIR generation. I've met a number of really high quality folks from the Gen Z generation, but man, the stereotypical Z'ers drove me absolutely effing crazy. No self accountability. No sense of earning anything. They want it all now and it's someone else's fault they don't have it. Ridiculously spoiled and out of touch.
STFU and put in the work. The rewards will come then and only then.

Stigmatizing labor and telling everyone they are going to be poor and have a ****ty life is wrong and has been a huge factor in creating this problem. I don';t know any conservative businessman that thinks that importing cheap labor is the answer. The businessmen in manufacturing that I know want skilled, dependable labor and would happily employ skilled US citizens and pay them well, but finding those people is hard, in part, because otherwise good young candidates have been convinced that they have to go to college and get law degrees or their life will suck.
The border is open because cheap labor is needed (in addition to the government profiting off the drug trade). To pretend otherwise is silly. And don't get me started on H1B visas.
The border is open because democrats want voters and bodies to be dependent on them. You think it is Republican businessmen that want millions of illegals pouring into the country every year? Please. How many jobs do you think these supposed Republican businessmen have to fill?

that hasn't been true for decades for blue collar work.

A good friend is a car mech and he could easily bank 60-hours of work a week b/c he was good and quick at his job.

He also did stuff on the side out of his garage and pulled in $8-$10k/year in cash.

Until recently? McConnell, Pelosi, Feinstein, Durban, Grassley, Biden, Bernie… all born before the end of the war and thus actually pre-boomer. Trump, Warren, Romney, Manchin, all squarely on the elder boomer side. Then in the core of boomerdom the list is looong. Hickenlooper, Cornyn, Blackburn, Paul, Graham, Murkowski, Klobuchar, Scott, Baldwin, Casey, Hassan…
