I will say this as a native of Dallas. Houston is friendlier and much much better food selections. But Houston is a crap hole and dirty.

Hartford isn't some paradise either. It's basically generic East Coast City that no one cares about. Connecticut is for commuters.

Fun fact, Connecticut is 5000 Square miles, the Houston Metro is 10,000. Population is also twice the size of Connecticut. So maybe the Houston Metro should get 4 Senators just to be fair.

Maybe if we could build some mountains we'd be like Denver. Or maybe if we had an ocean m, we'd be LA. What's the point of such a comment?

If only there were another part of congress where representation was determined by population.

It's not so much that Houston is ugly, it's there's nothing to do as a tourist. Downtown Houston is dead and has nothing worth seeing. Reliant Stadium is isolated surrounded by nothing. You need a car to get around.

FWIW several of the East Coast states that are tiny should be combined and should have been combined long ago. Connecticut and Rhode Island should be part of Mass, as it stands they get 6 Senators for a small piece of land without many people who are culturally very similar and vote almost identically.

Or better yet we can actually go back to the true Federalism system the country was founded on so Congress doesn't have much real power and who cares how stupid they want to run their little liberal enclaves.

There's greater substantiation to combine Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas by this logic.

It's sorta like how Fran Lebowitz described New York. Nobody actually enjoys it, it sucks. But New Yorkers are proud of how tough they are for living in such a terrible place. They don't like the place, they like how cool they are for enduring the terrible place.

All my Houston friends act the same way. When I visit every 3-6 weeks from the most incredible place to live on earth (College Station), I'm blown away by how much Houston sucks.

If someone from Connecticut is telling you that you suck then it's probably true. Connecticut is well versed in sucking.

At least they aren't glorified counties.

Still the greater point is Federalism is the better solution.

College Station is basically a cypress suburb/NW Houston at this point

100%. I'm here for career development and low cost of living. I came from San Diego which is pretty but brutal to live there.

My ESPN friend tells me Ct is mostly a series of suburban towns with very high crime rates and filled with people like Aaron Hernandez who was born in Bristol.

I lived there for a few years. There's definitely some bad bad pockets like Bridgeport, parts of Stamford and Hartford. There's also a lot of ridiculously affluent areas all over the State. Characterizing the state as mostly a place of very high crime rates is a bit laughable. I think stats bear out that it's easily one of the safer places to live in the US.

That's all major cities.

Ehh sort of, it's more like one small town that never ends. As soon as you're theoretically out of one town you're already in the next. The distribution of people is just totally different than anything you see in Texas. It's extremely population dense overall but there's not a lot of city and there's basically no vast unused space. It's just house house house house farm farm house house stores house house farm farm and on and on and on.

I'm mostly incredibly happy with the TX-for-CT swap but the food in Houston (and TX generally) is way better than anything here except the pizza.

Ned Lamont was part of realizing I'd come to a better place. It was mid-football season and suddenly the political ads during games were completely different than the background noise I'd gotten used to. "Our public schools are top 3 in the nation, and if we re-elect the governor we can do even better!" is a really different vibe than "we're #40 in education but here I am shooting a gun at a target that says CRT on it."
