Trump committed no crime related to the payment to Stormy, but there is nothing to indicate the payment was illegal, that the bookkeeping was improper, that Trump had direct, personal oversight of the bookkeeping, that it related to the campaign, that it involved campaign funds, and that the sole purpose of the transaction was to benefit his campaign.

Dems have a choice ahead. Drop all legal cases against Trump and let 2024 play out, or get absolutely crushed in 2024 across the board.

BTW - I think this may push off any announcement by DeSantis for weeks if not months, which would be wise for him. There is no air in the room left for him to breathe at the moment. Hunker down and keep scoring Ws in Florida.

The assumption is that it sours the "independents" to Trump. I think that makes sense even thought you might think it does the opposite. An independent, in theory anyway, isn't a partisan so they would see this nakedly partisan prosecution as an overreach and react against it in favor of Trump. In reality, most "independents" are typically just left leaning voters that don't want to identify with the freakishly crazy mainstream democrat party. They'll see it as confirmation that Trump is a terrible person and pull the marxist lever.

It's pretty simple.

Trump hit his high water mark in 2020 in terms of votes and they 'beat' him. They know they can beat him again with whatever lower vote total he gets since they've done it already. If he gets the nomination its in the bag for the Dems and they'll blame it on his unpopularity.

If DeSantis gets the nomination, the Dems really need Trump to go third party. Splitting the R vote still gives their cheating cover and likely the Dems could win that with no cheating (but they'd still have a plan in place to ensure the W).

The Dems worst possible outcome is DeSantis vs Dem with Trump out of the picture. There is no real world scenario where the Dems hold the office. They would either have to concede (unlikely honestly) or cheat so severly that the charade is up and its obvious to everyone and they just don't give a damn anymore. Considering how apparent a lot was in 2020 I see them still going that route.
