Assuming he really does have some kind of mental/developmental defect, the problem with people like this is they cannot be fixed. Not all mentally deficient people are bad or violent, but for those that are, society has two choices of how to handle them until medical science finds a way to completely fix/repair their brain.

Either we lock them away for life, or we put them down.

The most disturbing element of this was the lackadaisical response from the marine. She could have been killed and he's walking with no sense of urgency.

I am not a marine or a trained professional fighter but I don't think I could ever in a million years be so casual about something like that.

90% of people will choose the course of action that protects themselves over helping another.

Teachers created that culture when they allowed administration to dictate that both students in a fight get punished regardless if one was defending himself.

Society created that culture when they demanded that teachers cpuld not touch students.

Parents created that culture when they stopped supporting teachers.

From a meta POV there is ALOT of blame to go around.

It's gonna get worse before enough people get sick of it that they demand change.

People just don't want to get hit. Im going to assume that most of the people responding to this thread are males (given the responses).

The situation posted looks entirely different if you are a woman. I worked in a school where teachers were afraid to be out in the hall because of a fear of getting hit or beat up. It's an awful environment. Most teachers don't get into teaching expecting that physical harm is going to be part of the reality of the job. Almost none of them were trained in self defense or how to safely break up fights. At the end of the day, its a scary situation to put yourself between people in a fight.

When you are in a high school the level of injury increases quite a bit. I never had a problem stepping in to help out a coworker, but towards the end of my teaching days I sure as hell thought twice before getting in between students. If a student got knocked down or can't defend themselves, obviously you step in. I actually started using a survival whistle to break up fights. Some loud blasts from 130dB whistle broke up way more fights and dispersed crowds much quicker than I could by myself.

Getting beat up sucks and most people are going to do everything they can to avoid it. Its why I ultimately left teaching.

I am shocked at the number of times special needs mentioned. There is no acceptable excuse for this type of violent behavior.
There is also no excuse for lack of response by the marine. What a disgrace to the Marine Corp, if this was 25 years ago he would be forced out; but that was then.

Follow the $$. The feds send $$, in 2011 it was 4k/ kid in public school. Plus reembursement for bus rides, meals and other charges. School district sends the bills to DC and District is sent a check that can go into general fund to help regular Ed.

Ok, Dave Chappelle.

Lots of special needs students-- especially the ones labeled emotionally disturbed are given the keys to the school! Their BIP or behavior Intervention Plan makes teachers believe you cant do this or that for behavior modification or teachers themselves will get in trouble. Any good SPED diagnostician will fight tooth and nail to not let an ARD committee label a kid ED-- especially if it is the kids parents who are looking for an avenue of excuses for their kid who has no rules at the house and is really just a turd, or is drugged up. Once kid has the label, they are smart enough to know what they can get away with. When people back off at the temper tantrums, they will push envelope thinking they can get away with beating someone..
Having worked at school at group home, where 90% were ED, this was true, but you add in mental illness and abuse and lots and lots of behavior modification drugs, which I can see this kid being at. Group homes are mini prisons, and behavior is same almost.

I will get blasted for this-- but answer for this type kid is yes.
He doesn't need to be doing Alg II.
You could take some kids like him and and ask him to sweep floors, wash your car and tell him you got a twenty dollar bill waiting for him. He would do a jam up job. Freaking FEDs, make us keep them in classes as to not hurt their feelings. Probablly in this setting he could have played some ball too- and not been in suspension all the time.
