I always remember my uncle who had a set of small rural grocery stores in the Panhandle.
What were his stores named and do you recall any locations?

ETA - Reason im asking is that I'm from the Panhandle and my best friend has been in the grocery business out that way for decades so he might actually know your uncle.

I feel like there are TONS of flaming white liberals in New Mexico, based on my last road trip through the state. Flaming white liberals are great at nonbreeding themselves out of existence...they either tend to adhere to alternative lifestyles or just have fewer children than straight conservatives. That is just one contributing factor, but it's a factor we should all celebrate imo.

Want to be clear that I do not celebrate them killing their own offspring off at disproportionate rates though.

Lincoln, NM is a cool historic spot to stop. It's the last place Billy the Kid was arrested before being gunned down near by. I stayed in Sheriff Brady's house in the valley.

A buddy of mine owns the local brewery. Stop by if any of yall are in Ruidoso.

When I first moved to New Mexico I thought it was the butt ugliest place I'd ever seen, except perhaps for El Paso. However, after being there a while, I started going to art galleries. As many know, New Mexico has always been a haven for artists.

The paintings of New Mexico opened my eyes to its beauty. Not all natural beauty is green. Sitting on the eastern plains and seeing a rain storm 50 miles away is beautiful in its own way. Driving down from Cloudcroft to Alamogordo and being able to see for 200 to 300 miles across multiple ranges of mountains is breathtaking. Hunting down in and around the Gila wilderness where I was the only human being for 20 to 30 miles in any direction was incredible.

In addition, I learned not to judge homes in New Mexico by their cover. I have never previously been around adobe construction much so I was not impressed by all of the low, mud brick homes that were everywhere. Overtime, after visiting people in those homes, I realize that many of them were the homes of millionaires in war incredibly well decorated inside. There is probably no more comfortable and relaxing Type of home to live in than a well-made New Mexico adobe.

You guys putting New Mexico down are just showing your narrow mindedness.

I know people who live and do a large amount of business in New Mexico. If it were not for some them and the people in Texas who ski property there the sate would be in ruins. I also personally know people who retired from Los Alamos to Texas because they were tired of the democrats and the drug trafficking. An easy decision.

There certainly are. Santa Fe has a massive gay population due to all of the art galleries. I suspect per capita it's one of the largest gay populations in the country. One day at lunch while there we were literally the only hetero couple in the place. It was the two of us and every other table in the joint were lesbians.

They need a steady influx of new gays moving there from elsewhere to maintain that city.

Yeah. We know about the adobe. Nobody said anything about them. They're beautiful and perfectly adapted for their environment.

It's the corrugated metal and cinder block. Those towns between Taos and Las Vegas on 518 have to be some of the poorest areas in the US.

It's a testament to how **** democrat leadership ruins everything it touches.

I agree with that, but what is interesting is that some of those families first arrived in North America 100 or more years before Jamestown was settled. They are the oldest Europeans in North America.

Only way to do it is to have the GOP do a policy shift that allows Native Americans to do anything they want with their land in terms of leasing it or selling it. Allow residents of Reservations to have regular deeds to their property and build credit. Essentially make it the full property of the Tribes to do with as they wish. Instead the Government has always treated the Native Americans like children and they have acted accordingly and stayed dependent on government outside of a few that escape. Give them full rights to the land and they could make a fortune off of it in more ways than just having Casinos or a Ski Resort by selling mineral rights and developing it. Almost 10% of New Mexico is Native American and surprisingly it has slowly shifted more GOP similar to Hispanics (though not for the same reasons and not as dramatically). Republicans can get more of that vote but they simply don't care much about Native American issues.

The issue of course is the fear the Native Americans would make stupid decisions with the land and it would give up the control the government has over it. Personally I don't think it could be worse and I would rather Native Americans be treated more equally.

Also there is room with Hispanic voters in NM for growth for the GOP. The Dems treat them like children and want them to be their serfs.

It is fun. Get a group of rpeople together and rent out the caboose. Can bring your own booze there and it has an observation dome.

The opening sequence of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with River Phoenix as a young Indy on a train was filmed on that train. I was on the set for several days helping the caterer for the film.

Not sure what relevance the Dawes Act has to this. That was an Act where NA had a choice of giving up their land for a fraction of the value and tried to have NA that had little if any experience in American commerce and society to try to assimilate and compete. There were also rights linked to it and it had a lot of manipulation involved.

I'm essentially saying that the GOP should meet with Tribal Leaders and look at solutions that they want that give them more power over their land without having to give anything up. We have 140 years more experience since the Dawes Act as well to make sure the mistakes of that Act aren't repeated. As it stands NA are essentially ignored by both parties and given lip service or minor concessions.

its not a "cautionary tale" because you can't stop people from moving. how do you "t take care of matters in your state" to prevent it?

what is a "traditional" blue state? just about all these states were red at one time.
Here's a simple compare and contrast.

Colorado has added 2 US Reps in the past 40 years.
Colorado Districts 6 & 7 started out with Republican representation but since the late 2000s have had Democrat representation and are now solidly "Blue".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado%27s_6th_congressional_district
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado%27s_7th_congressional_district

I live in California's 30th District represented by s/head Adam Schiff.
This district has sent a Democrat to the US House for the past 60 years since the district left San Diego and moved to Los Angeles.

That's what I would call "traditional Blue" representation.

If you want to look at the Electoral Map, obviously everybody except Walter Mondale's home state of Minnesota was "Red" in 1984. But that was an anomaly which is unlikely to happen again.

How to preserve your way of life and protect against "move-ins"? Good question.
Florida seems to have figured it out.

I lived in Las Cruces in the mid 90s for a short time while I was doing some work at WSMR. Best food in the world there (Per Se excepted).

I've had NM food there and up in the northern areas of NM and the LC and Hatch area food kicks the northern food's ass. Chope's in Old Mesilla is the bomb.

That's where I learned that putting an egg on top of your enchiladas was GLORIOUS...

Good! Couldn't happen to a worse guy. The film crew was there on location for about a week and nearly the whole town of Chama hated him by the time they left to go up to the next location at Moab.

River Phoenix was a cool kid though.

Stacked not rolled, I assume. And I very much agree with a homemade red sauce. Not as good on a stack with homemade Hatch verde sauce, IMO. Getting those freshly roasted Hatch chiles in the fall, cook up some pork butt with broth and posole with onions thrown in with Hatch is a life giving food. I took to learning to cook New Mexican food like a duck to water and had some great cooks teaching me. Even learned to love lard which they use for a lot of recipes. They would have a ten pound bucket of lard in their kitchen and go through that in less than two months. Sopapillos, fry bread, carnitas, rellenos, etc.

But my fav restaurant was north of Santa Fe, Rancho de Chimayo. LINK If you ever get back that way. Never stayed at the B&B but the restaurant is fabulous.
