Two days before kickoff, beer sales at World Cup stadiums banned

Quote:

DOHA, Qatar The sale of all beer with alcohol at the eight World Cup stadiums was banned Friday, only two days before the soccer tournament is set to start.

Non-alcoholic beer will still be sold at the 64 matches in the country.

"Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from ... stadium perimeters," FIFA said in a statement.
Quote:

When Qatar launched its bid to host the World Cup, the country agreed to FIFA's requirements of selling alcohol in stadiums, and again when signing contracts after winning the vote in 2010.
Crooked ass *******s. Not only did they cheat to get the host city, but now they've lied and there are rumors of bribery of players too now. FIFA has to be the most corrupt governing body of a professional sport.

I think this was always the plan by both sides.

I've always thought it would be fun to go to the World Cup. I have since come to realize that you don't want to go to one outside of a First World country.

You realize that they allow alcohol in several places in Qatar right? They also agreed to all of FIFA's rules regarding this upon campaigning for the World Cup and when they signed the contract.

I've been to Dubai and Doha for work a few times. Hookers and alcohol can only be acquired in designated hotel/resorts where all the western tourists and business travelers and wealthy middle eastern hypocrites - like Saudi nationals on vacation - tend to congregate. I assumed they made deals when building these stadiums and fan villages for the World Cup for visitors from all over the globe to be able to drink their booze for a few weeks. Sounds like local pushback has them reneging on their deals. The world loses.

yes, I do realize this and having been there before I am somewhat familiar on how the country operates.
OMG, a Middle Eastern country "agreed" to someone's rules and decided to change their mind? Wow. How dare they do such a thing. This has to be the first time ever this has happened!

Yes, this was the initial plan from the get go. Budweiser bribed their way into the stadium, but wouldn't put up the extra money to grease the wheel here at the end.

There are still fan zones set up in Doha that will have alcohol, same as the hotels.

I lived in Doha up until March of this year.

In middle eastern/islamic culture a deal is not finalized until you force them to live up to their side.

This is why you have to be very careful with when you fulfill your side of the bargain and make sure u don't give them what they want until u get what u want.

I don't. Considering when it happened, they'd have made insane profits even with the recent crash.

So this was one of the conditions of letting them host. I was shocked they were going to allow it and figured they may pull a stunt like this.

LOL, so much for those $14/beer Budweiser sales. One liquor store in the whole state? Islam is so tolerant/loving.

The Qatari's begged/bribed for this to be held there. They're also confiscating any gay flags, and banning even 'gender neutral' airline flight uniforms. Lovely, lovely culture.

…you realize those stadiums were built with slave labor, right?

I get the alcohol thing is a big part of trying to enjoy such a boring game, but as far as moral outrage goes, this isn't exactly Dubai's issue #1.

the world loses because people can't drink at a stadium?

Please, please please happen. Be brave and stand up to the intolerant 'conservatives' over there, Megan. I promise to try not to laugh for a moment or two if/when you do.

Maybe even bring Griners wife along too.

Because they had a $75m deal with Budwesier to do this and are now reneging on it. Clearly seeking a bribe.

And they are still selling beer in the luxury suites. The ban only applies to the peasants with regular tickets.

F Qatar, and F Fifa for picking them.

Paying to be the exclusive anything at an event is not in my mind a bribe. Did Slovacek's bribe A&M to be the exclusive sausage of Kyle Field?

and if you haven't watched it - the FIFA documentary on Netflix right now is good. I've only gotten through two of the episodes but both Russia and Qatar bribed key members of the Executive Committee of FIFA to get these events.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.
