Regardless of plates, they are going to identify the car. It's going to be attached to you if you rented it. I bet every rental company has cameras at the front desk, so you'd be a sitting duck when you returned it.
Hiking in... ok, but that just leaves you on the cameras even longer, and that's even more incriminating.
I think the best bet is not to plot to kill anyone. Odds of avoiding the death penalty are pretty good with that.
