Guess those points weren't covered in his Fall classes. Maybe part of the Spring curriculum.
Yeah, I tend to think that WAY too much is being made of the fact that he was a Criminology student. At a superficial level, I get how Joe Q Public sees that and thinks "ZOMG HE WAS LITERALLY MAJORING IN HOW TO BE A SERIAL KILLERRRRRR!!!". No, not really…
In fact, my wife has likely learned MUCH more about how she'll get away with offing me from watching 'Snapped' (a running joke between us) than someone could learn from a Psychology/Criminology degree plan.
Some of his missteps are easier for me to understand than others, which are just baffling.
- Was careful to turn his cellphone off right before the murders, but didn't turn it off during any of his TWELVE previous stalker visits since, as stated in the PCA, he wasn't there to commit a crime on those visits. I could see me doing something 'D'OH!' like that.
- Leaving the knife sheath. Heat of the moment, adrenaline pumping, worrying that things got too loud, time to bail…. I think that was just a good old fashioned and understandable 'oopsie'. Obviously a HUGE one. My big question in this element, though, is where did he put the knife prior to leaving the scene? Just stick it in his pocket? You'd think if he brought it to the scene in the sheath, he'd logically be intending to slide it back into the sheath before leaving. Seems like he'd be forced to notice it's absence. Makes me wonder if he DID notice it missing, looked for it, started hearing the roommate stirring and/or worrying that things got too loud and just had to bail knowing he left it somewhere. Small chance that's why he returned mid-morning? Act of desperation to see if he might still be able to slip in and out to retrieve it?
- Driving his own car to/from. Makes zero sense not only for a Criminology PhD, but for anyone with an IQ above 50. Everyone knows there's cameras every 50 feet these days. Biggest inexplicable element, in my opinion.
- Leaving Witness Chick who saw him alive. I don't think he saw her. Short of being in a super-hurry, I can't think of any reason why he'd leave her alive.
