If the story of his DNA being in the house was true I'm guessing he was on a very short list of suspects. Once the gas station attendant did her overnight down time research and saw the car and they linked it to him they basically zeroed in and began their search. It also coincided with when a student would be going home for winter break and he likely didn't immediately go to mom and dad's house so they began getting the permission for cc records, phone records etc to track him and lulled him to sleep in the past few days while fairly confident of where he was and struck last night.

Wondering when they got the dna results back and truly impressive if they tracked him down with genealogical dna this quick. I wonder if he was already on their radar. I'm sure FBI profilers would've been looking at local criminology students and looks like both Idaho and WSU both have criminal degree options. If he was on a list and they checked the Elantra box already and then got the dna, pretty easily prosecutable case there

They'd been watching him for 4 days. Would like to know his comings and goings that they observed. Was he laying low, business as usual? Acting suspicious? Possibly looking for a next victim?

Highly doubt they had to go the genealogic route here. Same general idea, though, minus IDing potential suspects through 23 & me or ancestry.com.

Likely the perpetrator's DNA was found on scene and didn't match any known offender. This guy was likely a suspect based on having a white Elantra close to the crime scene and then going missing. Then you just stake out his garbage can or wait until he tosses a napkin or something, get his DNA and get a match.

How do you explain to the survivors that they really don't want to know why they survived?

No, that was a modification of The Jackal (wash off paint) and watching car restoration shows. I do not have enough street smarts to pull off a crime. Plus my truck has Sync4 which constantly sends location data to Ford, and the iPhone bluetooth antenna which connects to other bluetooth devices even when the phone is off as part of the "Find My iPhone" feature.

I'd steal a car to use while committing the crime, probably drive it to a remote place and set it on fire

Steal the rental, do the thing, return the stolen rental nearby.

The vehicle is already a DNA cocktail.

Might be even better if it's a vehicle you'd rented months before.

TJ is a little far away from Pullman, WA. I would say drive it to Spokane, give the keys to a bum or illegal.

All evidence would be completely destroyed upon this person using/living in/selling this vehicle. I was pretty sure a few pages ago that they would have a short-stack list of people based on the vehicle, if it was indeed the one they were looking for, they just needed a tip to connect the person to one on the list of registered Elantra owners.

The K-Bar murder weapon is long gone by now, but the fact that they recovered the vehicle is amazing. There should be trace evidence that would link him to the crime scene in it. There's no way you stab 4 people to death and track nothing into your vehicle.
