So amateur detectives, if they are putting makes and models out there, you think they have a decent thread they are pulling?
That was my first thought, then I was like, "If you really think this Elantra is key to the investigation, possibly the perp, why announce it?" Why not just keep looking for the damn car, there's got to be DMV records for a radius they can pull and then start narrowing it down from there...why give the perp the idea you're looking for that car (so they can ditch it, whatever).

But what do I know.

License plate readers are in Northern Idaho. Maybe they know who they are looking for but can't find them?

It would be crazy if it turned out to be an Indian from the nearby Nez Perce reservation.

What do you think will happen to the house? I can't imagine anyone wanting to rent it out, so it will be most likely torn down.
I formerly lived a block away from a house where a man murdered three members of his family. The house is still there and another family bought it and moved in.
But was it a nationally known crime? Did the case have the same impact as four college students killed by an unknown intruder in a small college town? This house is just too notorious to be left standing.

There's actually a documentary about this, that I have not yet seen.

Basically, reddit nerds found that someone who went missing in the Boston area 1 month before the event that barely resembled, at the time, one of the suspects in the Boston Marathon Bombing who we now know was Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

He was doxxed and his friends and family were harassed relentlessly by "social media journalists", the twitterverse, true crime communities, and even main stream media, based on just a rumor found on a reddit thread.

Turns out he wasnt. At all.

An early police statement said that some of the victims had defensive wounds, while others appear to have been murdered in their sleep (i.e. stabbed sufficiently that they bled out/died without gaining full consciousness and becoming capable of fighting back).

Do we know which victims had defensive wounds and which did not?

In my mind, this info would be huge in determining timeline of the murders and therefore motive, opportunity etc.

Not sure I agree. If you're walking around stabbing people in their sleep you could easily hit spots that may incapacitate or make people die quicker than others. Some may have had the ability to defend themselves and some may have not but assuming all victims were at some level of intoxication (let's be real... College students returning home after 1am) I think that information wouldn't really help so much.

Imo it was essentially 4 drunk kids who got stabbed to death 1 by 1, or the murderer stabbed both people in each room back and forth at first and then continued to finish the murder. Don't know how that helps establish timeline.

Were they told before purchase?

Back in the early 70s, we lived in a rental house wherein multiple people were murdered and didn't know for the first 8 months.
It's a real small town, so everyone was aware of its history. So small that you didn't give directions by street address, but used the owners of houses in the neighborhood. Even after previous owners died, it would still be referenced by the most prominent owner.

The next-door neighbors would have told them if they didn't know.

Yeah the Boston Marathon bomber situation is what I always remember when reading anything on Reddit. This current case makes me glad I do not post on Twitter, IG, and Facebook.

It's also being reported they are looking for a 2011-13 White Elantra that was in the area at that time.

They should start looking at carmax current for sale and back 5 years starting with spokane location and out from there.

Might not be as helpful as you might think in a college town. Students' cars are usually registered to their parents, who probably don't live in the local area.

I would think most homes could be cleaned up enough to have new buyers not be gagging, as long as the bodies were found/removed in short order, would be no odor, way less smell than a house with indoor dogs.

I had a guy who died in an RV in our park. Long story, but the gist of it was it was this time of year, pretty cool weather, and he went undicovered for 28 or 29 days. Had two little yip yap dogs and they were both alive when they finally found him. One died shortly after but I am sure they had both been consuming him. The lady who owned the RV told me she was going to move it to Florida and have it cleaned out and let some kinfolk live in it. I told her they would never be able to do that and sure enough they could never get it renovated to the point people could live in it. Can't imagine what it smelled like inside. Yuck.

I've seen lot of confusion about the "defensive wounds" and "stabbed in sleep" comments. People seem to be taking those as mutually exclusive circumstances, but from what I have read, they are not.

All four were found dead in their bed, and police HAVE said they believed they were all attacked while sleeping.

Defensive wounds would simply mean that maybe one woke up when the other was stabbed and there was a very brief fight, or someone was not incapacitated by the initial blow and were able to fight back. We already know that the two girls upstairs were in the same bed, and I don't think it's been clarified for the the guy and his girlfriend, but you can presume it's likely.

To me, the obvious assumption is that the first stabbing in the room woke the other up enough for them to freak out and put up at least a little fight.

Regarding the Elantra, they didn't say much, but they used the phrase that the person in the car likely has information. It could be a suspect, but more likely, they think the person may have seen something. It's possible they saw something and haven't connected it to the case. I highly doubt that they would put the suspect on alert.

From Nov. 18 through Dec. 2, 33 Moscow Police personnel four detectives, 24 patrol officers and five "support staff" were working the investigation. They were joined by 22 FBI investigators in Moscow, 20 agents who were elsewhere in the country and two agents from the Behavior Analysis Unit. Additionally, state police brought in 20 investigators, 15 uniformed troopers "to assist with community patrols," forensic investigators, a mobile crime scene team and a public information officer, official said.

However, the breakdown that police provided changed on Saturday. Officials noted at the time that the assigned "resources vary based on the current needs of the investigation."
Quote:

"These numbers are approximated and do not reflect additional off-site personnel or other assistance provided," the press release states. It notes that the case has also received assistance from the Latah County Sheriff's Office.

As of Saturday, the number of Moscow Police Department personnel dedicated to the case fell to 11: six detectives up by two from the four who were previously assigned and five support staff, officials said.

Meanwhile, the number of FBI personnel assigned to the case increased to 46 investigators working in Moscow and elsewhere in the country, and two agents from the behavioral analysis unit.

Idaho State Police's staffing decreased in the number of investigators working the case, from 20 to 13. The number of uniformed troopers remained the same, while the mobile crime scene unit was eliminated. ISP forensic services investigators remain on the case, and a communications team has also been deployed, police said.
Quote:

On Wednesday, former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker told Fox News the investigation is "at a sensitive stage."

"It's on the verge of being a cold case in the sense that resources and the FBI and the State Police start to peel off," he said on "America's Newsroom."

It makes sense to reduce resources once the bulk of data collection has been done.

Now they are down to data analysis.

It's not like the Moscow PD has a ton of other stuff to do. Hit the pavement, revisit everything again with rested eyes, talk to people again to see if anything was missed or changes.

They likely also don't have resources to do it with and have relinquished the bulk of the investigation to a department that no longer uses 5-1/2" floppy disks.

(Tin foil hat on) Or it was planned.

Guy providing liquor to kids at the frat house if they come outside to that field, draw the police response to that area? More than one perp?

(Tin foil hat off.) Very confusing case as little is adding up. When nothing adds up quickly and the FBI is involved...to that degree...there's a connection somewhere to another crime scene. They are running those clues down but they already have VICAP and if matches are happening (minus the number of vics) would they let that info out?

I'm interested about this as well. Hadn't seen this on any other reports.

Also, can we revisit the "leakage" that came from the house? I remember seeing in this thread about speculation of it being "heating oil" and not blood, but I have not seen that anywhere else.

Property records say the house is 100% electric. If true, there shouldn't be heating oil on site.

I guess that's what I'm getting at. Several posters here said it was heating oil.

Starting to sound like that's not the case at all.

Accoding to the floor plans of the house, that location was a bedroom, Xana's, not a mechanical closet. Also the drip pattern was more consistent with blood rather than an oily substance. That is not to say for sure it was blood as no test results have been released.

Geez… I can see how misinformation and hearsay can quickly get out of hand without actual facts of the case.

Seems pretty evident that it is blood, but I suppose we won't know for certain until the evidence of the case is laid out in court.

Some reports can be released, at least to the families if not the public. Most everything one would assume about this case, with two people in the house and the dog sleeping through that, gets thrown out because of the very wonky layout of that "house." Almost like it was two houses as it was one house and then a two story addition on the rear of the first.

I would like to read the autopsy reports, tox and issue sample reports. Should reveal the order of the victims and also how quickly they were incapacitated from which wounds.

Aside from being a macabre detail, what difference does it make? It's known that these young people were butchered, which inherently means the crime scene was very bloody.

I hope the judge here does what they did in the Gainesville Ripper case ... photographic evidence released one time to the media/public (no copies allowed) for verification purposes and then burn it all once the killer is executed.
