I always assumed that SFA was part of the State system.

I went to SFA 3 semesters before transferring. I like the place, but it is definitely a sub-par school (at least the business program) where all of my friends went who couldn't get into bigger/better schools. Much like Commerce, I don't think much of it but I think if it became part of our system it would lift it up tremendously. And I see benefits to A&M having a deep east Texas school with ag related specialties.

It always had the reputation of being a party school, but it has its departments that are OK. I've know a lot of SFA grads and a lot of tech grads (among other schools); I'd take the SFA ones by and large over tech ones, if I'm hiring in general. Not to say there aren't exceptions and I'm not comparing SFA to all schools per se. Their music school is decent. Along with a school like Sam, its a place where you get what you put into it. Unlike A&M, at least when I was at A&M, it isn't/wasn't super competitive where A's can be difficult, depending on the department. If you don't get a 3.5 at SFA, you aren't putting in much effort. You couldn't say that at A&M when I was there; a 3.5 or higher was something to be proud of (again, depending on department).

SFA is the only school east of I-35 I would even consider letting my kid go to other than A&M, Sam, Rice, or (gulp) Cougar High -- iffy on that one. I'm not too familiar with Lamar. (Not including Southwestern in Georgetown, or Baylor, both pretty much ON I-35).

With all that said, I hate all these schools changing names. It was one thing for NTSU to go to UNT, but A&M Commerce was awful. So was Texas State, which I still call Southwest Texas.

A&M Soil and Crop Science is NOTHING like whatever they're doing at SFA.

Texas A&M Nacogdoches?
Hopefully it's that and not a system of a system like what UT did in Longview: UT Tyler at Longview. Lol.

That was so stupid. Longview was originally going to have a branch campus of SFA until a Texas alum stepped in and gave $1 million for it to be a UT Tyler satellite. Now, it's just a branch of a branch. I'm not even sure if they have in person classes there. It used to be streamed in from Tyler.

Yep, really dumb. My parents were pretty miffed about that at the time (I'm from Longview) and it never made sense to me. SFA Longview made way more sense.

It's a joke at this point.

UNT has a branch in downtown Dallas.

I would argue there is nothing major about any of these aside from UT and A&M.

My impression of SFA is that it has changed for the worst the last 10-20 years. Not impressed.
It was never worth much of a damn in the first place. Several of my dumbass high school buddies graduating from there are proof of that.
One of the smartest people I know is an SFA grad. Visionary who sees opportunities others don't.

They also have a health science center in the Museum District in FW.

The State system is probably the largest of all of them, UT may have more students though.

Older sister went there. Back in the late 60s had a kick ass music department with their lab bands winning national championships.

She played with Ronnie Laws when he was at SFA.

SFA's most famous alumni…

SFA was for all the idiots at my high school. That being said, I had fun when I went and visited there during school.

I worked with a guy that failed out of SFA. Went onto graduate from tech.

Also, I don't think they'd change the name of it went into the A&M system. SFA is a well known school around the state, and I don't think A&M would want to mess that up. They may put something like "A member of the Texas A&M University System" with the brand.

Viewed wiki below this. Had no idea the Texas State system existed. It appears to be the oldest one we have but not remotely the largest....at all.

I did learn that Sul Ross is in this system whereas I always thought it was part of the A&M System.

I don't know, they had no problem wiping Texas A&I off the map.

I had no idea some of these A&M schools existed… Texas A&M University Texarkana?

You are right YouBet the State system is not as big as I thought, a lot of state schools that I thought were in it are in other systems (ex. Tarletan). I still think of the A&M system as CS, Prairie View and Galveston for whatever reason.

SFA is a much bigger and well known brand than Texas A&I. I honestly had to look up what it was, because I would have thought you accidentally put an i rather than a m.

I agree with most of that, but changing to Texas State was a genius long term marketing move that aligns with them trying to move past Tech and UH into the #3 state school slot.

A&I should have kept their old name, though.

I completely agree with this, and at the time I thought it was a missed opportunity for TAMU.

Tend to agree although my mom was pissed about the change. She graduated from SWTSU. She will also be the first to tell you that Tarleton was way more difficult than SWTSU. She did her first two years at Tarleton.

SFA would fit much better culture wise with A&M than tu or Tech.

I didn't realize Southwest Texas State Teacher's College (where my Dad went) had a "system" though. Interdasting....

Tarleton University hasn't changed it's name and it's been in the system for quite a while..

I'm surprised SFA has been allowed to retain the name of a white man who was influential in Texas history. Really racist of them. Will probably get changed with whoever absorbs them.

I went to both A&M and SFA and grew up in Nac. Chatter from the SFA alumni is that there is a law that was passed a few years ago that guarantees state universities named after a historical figure the right to keep their name if they join a system. So if SFA joins a system it's name would not change.

I have to say that I had the best professors of my college/grad school time at SFA. No grad students or TAs. All people who chose to be at SFA because they wanted to teach and not "publish or perish." The student body left a lot to be desired as a whole compared to the quality of students at A&M, but a smart, engaged student who wants to learn could learn a lot there. At one time SFA's med school placement rate for its pre-med program was surprisingly good.

I've been gone for 30+ years, though, and can't speak to what the university is like now. The town as a whole is changing. The local old money that has traditionally provided a lot of support (including to SFA) is dying off. Being in a system is probably a smart move for them.
