I guess it could be true if you consider going from 1 to 2 on a 100 point scale, as significant. 100% more than it was, but completely insignificant still.
I've seen the difference in public interest for the NBA vs. the WNBA as being due to the NBA having "a fifty year head start". And the only reason Brittney Griner had to go play in Russia was sexism prevented her from earning an NBA-like salary.
