I absolutely appreciate what Musk is doing....but defending free speech should not be contingent on an unelected official.

says a lot about those elected officials then
Says alot about those who elect those officials.

(But yah, I agree with you).

If Musk makes Twitter a place for discussion and unbiased information, without using it as a platform to control information for a particular political message and influence elections, then his personal political beliefs really don't matter regarding ownership of the platform.

If he makes both conservatives and liberals upset, then he probably is doing it right.

You guys may want to tap the brakes. Current CEO is still in charge and has a 42MM buyout if terminated before 12 months.

For sure but the divide is on a steep break over the last 10 years

Between Tesla, spacex, Twitter and all of Twitters subsidiaries Musk is going to arguably be the most powerful entity in the world. The amount of information, AI, tech, etc he owns will control whatever he wants
Now do Google.

Elon Musk has no where near the amount of information Google has on us.

His vow to remove the bots and only allow authenticated people sounds promising.
I'm actually not so sure about the authenticating people part. Assuming you have to provide identification to prove you're a human it could be the start of the end of anonymity online.

Hopefully he finds a way to do it without forcing people to identify themselves.

He generally tries to be pretty middle of the road.

I'm hoping he pushes for some solid quality of life updates to Twitter. An edit button would be great for starters. I also hope he gets the team to nuke a bunch of old, inactive accounts and get rid of bots. Sounds like he is interested in doing the latter.

Twitter, so far, has been pretty awful about implementing features people actually want.

If Musk wants to do what's in the best interest of the world, he would just buy it to shut it down completely. Or say something to the affect of "Twitter will be disabled for one month while changes are made" and see how the world reacts. That's what would benefit society the most.

I understand but I would argue that the type of information Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter are gathering is more valuable politically than google.

No, you don't understand.

Tesla is gathering driving behavior. SpaceX's Starlink network wouldn't have access to anything that Comcast, AT&T, etc haven't had for decades. And again, Twitter only wishes it had the amount of information Google has on us.

Does Twitter, Starlink, Tesla have our search history? Our emails? Can they listen in on your phone conversations? Text messages? Are they in our companies? Can they subtly change your opinion on things by altering search results on everything Google users search for? Tesla could track where their customers drive. Google could track where everyone with an Android phone drives, and continue to track them when they get out of the car.
