I, for one, love it when CCP-Dems get exactly what they vote for. More hilarity (from December):

Quote:

In her excellent book Shorting the Grid: The Hidden Fragility of Our Electric Grid, Meredith Angwin describes how a combination of bad policy, complicated governance, and dense bureaucracy has made the entire electric grid of New England incredibly vulnerable to collapse, especially during winter cold snaps (you can buy Angwin's book here and follow her Twitter account here). She tells the story of how Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) like ISO New England have evolved to oversee bulk electric power systems and transmission lines, and how producers of electricity must subordinate their natural gas consumption for use in home heating during extreme cold weather events. Of course, the demand for electricity skyrockets during these same extreme events as people supplement their home heating needs with electric space heaters, further exacerbating the problem.

Angwin goes on the tell the story of how New England's electric grid nearly collapsed during cold snaps in late December 2017 and early January 2018. In the book, she quotes from an op-ed she wrote for the Valley News shortly after the incident (emphasis added throughout this piece):
Quote:

"Around 5:00 P.M. on January 6, 2018, I snapped a light on as the sun went down. The temperature was around minus 8 degrees Fahrenheit. It had been zero at lunchtime and would be minus 15 the next morning. As usual, the light went on. As grid operator ISO New England had planned, oil had saved the grid. During that very cold week, about one-third of New England's electricity came from burning oil. The people at ISO-NE might think it is unfair to say that they planned to save the grid with oil, but they did, because of the Winter Reliability Program."
She goes on to describe that while burning oil had averted disaster, it had only barely done so. The grid was hours away from rolling blackouts before the weather thankfully turned warmer. The book then covers the broken interplay between policy, markets, and fuel security, how renewables impact the grid, and her thoughts on a more rational path forward. It is well worth a full read.

You would think that the near collapse of their energy grid would have motivated the good people of New England to get serious about shoring up their energy needs ahead of future cold snaps. You would be wrong. Instead, they have set about the task of systematically dismantling existing critical infrastructure and blocking the development of proven technologies. In 2019, the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station was shuttered, leaving New England with only two nuclear power facilities. There are no plans to build more.

More urgently, virtually every attempt to expand the region's natural gas pipeline infrastructure has been delayed, blocked, or abandoned. Here's a sobering report from InsideSources from mid-2019 that describes the situation:
Quote:

"As activists become more adept at enlisting government in their war on oil and gas pipelines, even small projects are becoming difficult to build.

Last month, voters in Longmeadow, Mass., approved a non-binding ballot measure encouraging the town to buy land to block a local natural gas metering and transfer station.

This past Earth Day, the mayor of Holyoke, Mass., announced his opposition to a proposed 2.1-mile, 12-inch natural gas pipeline that would increase capacity to meet rising demand. He asked federal regulators to reject the pipeline.

In March, the Bristol, Vt., Selectboard voted to cancel a license agreement with Vermont Gas that would have allowed Bristol residents to connect to a gas line that runs from Colchester to Middlebury, vtdigger.com reported.

From large, interstate pipelines to small lines connecting towns and neighborhoods, anti-fossil fuel activists have proven highly successful at blocking, through regulations or lawsuits, new natural gas infrastructure in the Northeastern United States.
"
Just last month, voters in Maine killed an electricity transmission line project that would have brought renewable hydro power from Quebec to Massachusetts. Here's a report from the Boston Globe:
Quote:

"In what appears to be a stunning setback to Massachusetts' climate goals, Maine voters on Tuesday rejected a referendum on a transmission line that would bring hydroelectric energy from Canada to the Bay State.

As of just before midnight, with 421 of the state's 571 precincts reporting, a "yes" vote to stop the $1 billion project that is already under construction had garnered 60 percent support, according to unofficial results.

Energy from the line is a key part of how Massachusetts plans to achieve its goal of halving emissions by the end of the decade.
The Maine vote does not spell the immediate end of the project, as the line's supporters are already saying they will contest the referendum in court, but even that will likely result in a set-back to the project's planned timelineand there is no time to waste.
"
The great irony of the situation is New England sits only a few hundred miles from the most prolific natural gas producing region on Earth the Appalachian Basin. According to the US EIA, if the region were a standalone country it would have been the third largest natural gas producer in the world in the first half of 2021, behind only Russia and the rest of the US. And yet, by refusing to build the necessary pipeline infrastructure, New England has opted out of sharing in this critical domestic bounty. If any thought leaders from the region are reading this piece, the Doomberg team put together this handy guide to solving your regional energy problems:
It goes on from there. Anyway, I laughed.

This is how leftists, operate and create the problems we are seeing

To appear "green" they shut down fossil fuel energy production in their area to claim they making a difference for Mother Gaia wether they're Cali, NY or most of Europe, they all do this

But of course they still need it to power their grid because wind and solar can't and they won't use nuclear

So instead they import fossil fuel energy from the outside while using patented liberal doublethink to pretend this makes them clean and green since their power comes from the magic wall socket and they can ignore where those power and pipe lines and are coming from

This dependence on importing energy leads to higher prices of everything and in Germany's case robs them of their National autonomy because someone else can just turn out the lights if they want to

Another example of elitists screwing things up for the working schlups in NY and NE. They could have cheap nat gas if they allowed it. In this case tho most of the populace have been brainwashed and agree with the elitists and so I don't feel that bad for them.

This is just a small example of what the world's proletariat will get in the Globalists vision for the Great Reset .

A generation ago, the press - working-class themselves, or not far removed - would make it clear to the masses that the masses were getting screwed by the wealthy elites setting bad policy.

Now? The press is in cahoots with the wealthy elites, because the press likes access to the high arts and cocktail parties.

You will never see the plain, easy-to-understand information PZ has presented in any mainstream publication.

I am always amazed how these idiots try to block power lines, pipelines and drilling every way they can yet they have no solution on how to get the energy to where it is needed.

They will only learn through an out right weeks long failure of the grid. Let them spend a month freezing and going hungry because the system has collapsed. I hope that it happens. Those that survive will hopefully be a little more interested in how they get the energy they need.

I really don't understand it, but I think very few people on the left learn from their mistakes. They just make excuses and blame someone or something else. It's like socialism. They always believe they will do it the right way and it won't fail like it has throughout history.

Look at the black community. 95% still vote for Dems despite the fact that their lives and culture has gotten worse since civil rights reform. Did their lives and culture improve when Obama was in office? No. Yet they will never not vote for Dems.

Eventually these dumb decisions are going to catch up to them. It'll probably be next winter when there will be the perfect storm of increased demand, spiking prices due to domestic inflation and massive international pressure as countries abandon RU O&G. Add a cold snap and people won't be able to afford the energy to heat their homes.

Thr O&G companies will be demonized and the fact domestic infrastructure development will have been stopped won't be mentioned.

Will they? When we had energy issues a year ago, did they blame the policies encouraging spending on unreliable green energy production, or did they blame Ercot?
Keegan99

Yup. Guarantee you that the leftist's response to this is "We just need to tax the rich (or corporations, take your pick) and subsidize energy for those in need!"

It would never - could never - be "We need policies that allow everyone to have inexpensive energy." Because that doesn't further the accumulation of state power and control.

This is a feature, not a bug. In order to move away from fossil fuels, they have to remove the competitive price advantage over solar and wind. Once people get used to paying high prices, they can outlaw these as options without large voter backlash.

This reminds me of an environmentalist we knew. She would rant on about the environment and "big oil" and electric. She always claimed that she did not use her air conditioning, however every time we walked by her place, in the summer, the air compressor was screaming like a banshee. She lived very comfortably, but she talked up a good game.

I believe that some people did point at wind & solar as part of the problem. Sadly not enough though and the MSM played down the fact that wind & solar were not producing at the level required. Hopefully behind the scenes they are shoring up our gas and coal powered production systems.

Wind & Solar are nice but it is stupidity to assume that they will be there when it is absolutely needed.

The NE will eventually be in a world of hurt and it will hurt a lot. They will deserve it.

Spoke a friend that does international work in Hungary and Romania. Where gas prices are $6 per MMBTU here they are currently over $40 per MMBTU in Europe and have had spikes last month over $60 per MMBTU. They do conventional drilling over there and finding/developed costs are substantially less that the horizontal plays.

Is it because they don't have the pipelines to move gas? Or they refuse to get it out of the ground so must get it from Russia?

I'm referring to Europe here.

It does not matter for if it does catch up to them, the Democrats which they vote for in mass, will believe what they tell them that it is the fault of the greedy oil, coal, gas, or electric companies which has caused this.

And of course, being the left, they will believe them, like always, hook, line, and sinker.

Stupid is what stupid does.

Unfortunately, the urban centers dictate life for the bulk of the counties in the NE, and it sucks!

I have a bunch of conservative family members up there who live in the rural communities who have zero effective representation due to the large cities stuffed with libs.
