More on the discovery of a NK-made SAM system in Russian service.

"There is also the possibility that Russia is using the system to bolster its own air defense capabilities. If that were the case it would suggest that Moscow has a particular need for these types of weapons, reflecting the fact that it has taken heavy losses in terms of this type of equipment and is struggling to make good attrition, or at least to replace equipment in a timely fashion."

Ukraine strikes Russia with a massive air raid.

"Ukraine carried out one of its largest attacks against Russia in this war, striking energy production facilities, weapons storage sites, and other military targets in about a dozen regions across the country. The attacks reportedly involved more than 200 drones, including Ukraine's new Peklo missile drone. Russian sources claim that Ukraine also used U.S.-made ATACMS and UK-made Storm Shadow missiles in a combined, widespread attack."

Ukraine receives first of Germany's new SP howitzer design.

"Eventually, Ukraine will receive 54 RCH 155s, enough for three artillery battalions, although six vehicles will remain in Germany, at least initially, for training. The first six systems are planned for handover this year."

Interesting look at the variety of drones the US has sent to Ukraine. A valuable proving ground under combat conditions.

Too heavy for it's role? Too long to assemble?

Too long to assemble is part of it.

But, we've flown them at our Institute and they've not had a great track record...

The Trillium HD-50 is a nice camera, though...however, that's just a payload option we have.

Durability/dependability? I'm guessing the article somewhat undersells assembly time? Would also tend to think that catapult launch would unnecessarily introduce potential complexity in the field?

Dependability was subpar. <<<<--- That's my opinion.

Catapult is something lots of platforms have, but the Penguin takes quite a bit of time to set up.

Norwegian F-35s deployed to NATO ally Poland scrambled in response to recent Russian missile attack on Ukraine.

"In the past, Poland has said that Russian missiles have entered its airspace after being launched from the St. Petersburg area against Ukrainian targets near the western city of Lviv. These missiles then traversed Belarus and entered Polish airspace for about 40 seconds before turning toward their targets in Ukraine. Of course, this provides only a very limited reaction time, should Poland decide to intercept them."

Just do it. Russia should foot the bill to repair the damage done to Ukraine by Putin's war.

"Support appears to be growing in the West to fully seize hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of Russian assets that were frozen following Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Nations, including the United States, Canada, Britain, several European Union members states and Japan, froze about $300 billion of assets owned by Russia's Central Bank after Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022."

BILLIONS

There's ample legal cover. Note the authors.

"Governments would have plenty of legal justification for moving ahead. On Nov. 14, 2022, the United Nations formally recognized that Russia must "bear the legal consequences of all of its internationally wrongful acts, including making reparation for the injury, including any damage, caused by such acts."

Russia increasingly using decoy drones in an attempt to deplete Ukrainian air defenses.

"In this way, the decoy will appear to Ukrainian air defenses as if it's an attack drone, prompting them to try and engage it and increasing the likelihood that attack drones will make it to their target. Even if no attack drones are present, these decoys can suck up hugely valuable interceptors which are prized and not easily replenished. A drone like this that costs maybe $10,000 can be brought down by a missile that costs $1 million at least, leaving less of them for real threats."

Ukraine's investment in its drone industry is paying off with mass attacks far inside Russia.

"Ukraine's growing drone warfare capability not only exposes vulnerabilities in Russia's defenses but also shifts the dynamics of the conflict. These strikes force Russia to divert resources to protect critical infrastructure, further straining its military logistics. For Ukraine, the attacks represent a cost-effective means of disrupting Russia's war effort and demonstrating its ability to retaliate even in the face of a prolonged ground war."

Ukraine is committed to drone production to supplement its artillery and substitute for its tiny air force.

"The country raised its drone manufacturing capacity to 4 million units a year, the president said at a defense industry forum in October, compared with production of about 300,000 drones in 2023. Domestic production accounted for more than 96% of the drones used by the armed forces."

Putin is clearly calling Trump's bluff and is not interested in a negotiated peace deal because he believes Trump will not significantly increase aid to Ukraine in the short term. He's buying more time for more military gains on the battlefield while the Trump administration vacillates on a response. Putin is willing to accept whatever new financial sanctions the Trump administration throws out. It will likely take Congress passing a new military aid package to elicit any real movement from Putin and that is not likely to happen this year.

The goalposts have shifted from Day 1 to Day 100 for a peace deal.

Quote:

In a Wednesday article the publication says Trump has set retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, his special envoy to Ukraine, a 100-day deadline to end the war in Ukraine. The former army commander was chosen for the post based on the peace plan that he had come up with last year.

The WSJ and many others believe that because Russia has already called Kellogg's roadmap a "non-starter" and the special envoy a "relic of the Cold War," he will have little or no chance of succeeding unless Trump himself takes a lead in any negotiations.

Building on the post immediately above, here's a look at the Trump administration's evolving thinking on supporting Ukraine.

"Trump is committed to continuing to provide weapons aid for Ukraine, the Times reported. And that provides a clue into how a big increase in NATO defense spending might help both Ukraine and the United States.

A former senior White House official who is familiar with discussions between former President Joe Biden's national security team and Trump's, said the two teams were considering a plan where the United States would provide needed arms to Ukraine."
