Sounds like the Ukes are hitting anything and everything with an EW signature. Not a terrible strategy.

The one they struck in Ukraine (Nebo) certainly is that type which can. Any Russian radars in Ukraine make perfect sense for the UFA to target, most especially that type.

The weekend/last week strikes at over the horizon radars, are almost exclusively useful at much much higher altitudes and/or longer ranges (the one hit was not helpful in defending Crimea, the other OTH installation was targeted with a $500K Portuguese drone but did not damage it, apparently). ATACMS only go up around 30 or 40 miles and really are not easily detected by that type of radar at all (they are comparatively small vs. an ICBM, only 13 feet long, 2 feet wide).

Most of the replies to Tyler's various tweets seem to be Russian bots warning about the coming nuclear war or wondering why Ukraine isn't accepting a peace plan before they lose more land.

Now that Ukraine has long range ballistic and cruise missiles and permission to use them inside Russia, it appears to be trying to peel back radars which can cover large swaths of Russia and Ukraine, and which also serve to cue other Russian air defense systems.

Losing those long-range radars will make it easier for Ukrainian missiles and long-range drones to get through to their targets and potentially force Russia to thin out its air defenses immediately surrounding Ukraine in order to help protect military and civilian assets deep inside Russia.

In addition, the deep strike targets (of any current value or not) make the orcs move ADA assets from the Uke front to cover these assets opening up holes in the front.

Ukrainians should just absolutely pepper every single radar installation in reach. We should be feeding them every single target.

Poland will fortify its border with Russia's ally Belarus as early as next week in response to what Warsaw says is a "ruthless hybrid war" waged by Moscow to destabilise its western neighbours.

Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister who visited the Belarus border on Wednesday, announced the reintroduction of a buffer zone at the frontier to stop illegal migrants being pushed into the EU by Russia.

Tusk has made stronger border security a priority since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, recently pledging to spend 10bn zlotys ($2.5bn) to fortify Poland's borders with Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and make them "impregnable" to an attack.

Speaking alongside Tusk, defence minister Wadysaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland would send more soldiers and police to the border to respond to "a ruthless hybrid war".

Warsaw is accusing Russia and Belarus of sponsoring a new attempt to push large numbers of African and Middle Eastern migrants into Poland illegally, one of several recent moves by Russia and its ally to test its land and maritime borders with EU states as the Ukraine war grinds on.

They have a reason and a plan for hitting those radars. It amazes me that Russia can't prevent it. Their ability against the Ukranian drones is just *****

"For the first time, Sweden will supply Ukraine with two ASC 890 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft as part of a new SEK 13.3 billion ($1.25 billion) military aid package, the Nordic nation's largest to date."

"Sweden's latest aid package to Ukraine also covers supplies of all of the country's PBV 302 armored tracked personnel carriers so Kyiv can reconstruct damaged bridges, US made Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and "resources" to maintain previously supplied equipment."

"For Ukraine, an AEW&C aircraft capability is of huge significance.

Compared to ground-based radar systems, the airborne Erieye radar offers a much more useful 'lookdown' capability. This ability to peer down from above, less encumbered by line-of-sight limitations of terrain, is especially useful for detecting low-flying Russian drones and cruise missiles, which can otherwise remain unseen or at least hard to track and engage due to their lower operating altitudes and small signatures. Just the benefits in battlespace awareness this aircraft can provide in this application alone are immense considering the constant threat of Russian long-range kamikaze drones and cruise missiles that have battered Ukraine for years.

Once F-16s are available to Ukraine, the Saab 340 AEW&C will be able to work as a fighter control asset, detecting targets, prioritizing them, and then assigning them to the fighters for interception."

Note: Almost certainly the Saabs will a priority Russian target and, as a result, will likely operate in Ukraine's far south and west to provide max stand-off distance and max reaction time vs any incoming threats. That will unfortunately limit their ability to see deep into Russia, but just covering Ukraine will nonetheless be a huge boost. Protecting these aircraft from being tracked at a distance may be among the reasons Ukraine has recently targeted Russian long-range radars.

A big complication with airborne radar is ground clutter. With old analog radars they could use the doppler shift on the returns to filter out slow moving objects but some of these drones are pretty slow so if you set the filter at too low of a speed, or remove the filter altogether, you risk saturating your scopes with automobile traffic. Digital systems have better filtering controls but I suspect that it's still pretty easy to lose track of slow moving targets.

While I don't doubt some of the really small and slow drones may be overlooked, this aircraft uses a modern Erieye AESA radar which has generally excellent low and slow discrimination.

New and expanded artillery ammo plants coming online as the Army ramps up to produce 100,000 rounds a month by the end of next year. That will be a ten-fold production increase from just a couple of years ago.

"Once complete, the empty shells made in the new Mesquite plant will be shipped to the Army's sole facility for filling them with explosives a World War II-era plant in Burlington, Iowa. Next year, however, many of the shells will be sent to another new General Dynamics factory that is under construction in Camden, Ark.

The Pentagon's drive to reinvest in ammunition production will also result in the Army's Iowa plant opening a second line for filling shells with explosives, and the partial reopening of a plant in Parsons, Kan., for packing artillery propellant charges that was largely shuttered in a round of base closures in the 2000s."

The war's toll. There will be mentally and physically maimed Ukrainians of all ages for many years to come. It could all end tomorrow if Russia ended its aggression.

Really feels like we're reaching a huge inflection point in the war. One that I don't think Russia will be able to recover from. Not predicting imminent collapse or anything, but Russia is on fumes.

As much as I'd like to believe this I just don't. It seems strange to me that RuZZia has resorted to golf carts and motorcycle attacks, but they're recruiting / conscripting 30k soldiers a month. Untrained and meat for the grinder, but they're making gains at horrendous costs. RuZZian's just don't care about the dying or the dead.

I saw some of the footage of the motorcycle attacks - it was so bizarre

three motorcycles with 2 men on each- just trying to drive through deep underbrush near a tree line until they are all wacked and then set on fire.

Yeah in Russia you don't just die a usual bullet riddled death. It's that and then fire. Always fire.

Biden gives Ukraine permission to carry out limited strikes within Russia using US weapons

Quote:

President Joe Biden has given permission to Ukraine to strike inside Russian territory with American munitions, though he has restricted their use so Kyiv can only hit targets over the border close to Kharkiv after Russia made significant advances around the city in the northeastern part of the country close to the Russian border, two US officials told CNN.

Reports of strikes on the Russian port of Kavkaz near Kerch, and an attempted strike on the port in Novorossiysk. Details to come. Apparently the attack may still be ongoing.

Really hope Ukraine brings down the Kerch Bridge. Would be great, doubly so if they can figure out a way to hamper the railways in the occupied South.

Big losses for orc yesterday. 14 tanks not including MLTBs.

Andrew notes the ferries damaged as rail ferries. Would like to see more info on that.

"The Ukrainian General Staff released satellite imagery of what it says was a U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) strike on Russian ferries in Kerch. The ferries have been critical for transporting Russian troops and materiel heading to the front lines, especially during interruptions with traffic on the bridge." These are very large ferries, capable of loading entire freight trains, for example. Report includes other updates from the front.

This is a big deal.

"The President recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use U.S.-supplied weapons for counter-fire purposes in the Kharkiv region so Ukraine can hit back against Russian forces that are attacking them or preparing to attack them," a U.S. official told The War Zone. "Our policy with respect to prohibiting the use of ATACMS or long-range strikes inside of Russia has not changed."

"Russia is staging its forces across the border and firing from there, this includes launching airstrikes using glide bombs from Russian territory. This would presumably allow Ukraine to now fire on all these target types, taking away this safe haven for Russian forces."

This reads as the US giving Ukraine permission to use our weapons for short-range attacks into Russia in the Kharkiv region, but not long-range attacks as, for example, the UK and France have allowed. Regardless, the "Kharkiv region" can be liberally interpreted to include most of northeastern Ukraine and adjacent Russian territory. Since that region has been the focus of Russian offensive ops for some time now, this allows Ukraine to go after Russian troop assembly points and materiel depots before they move into Ukraine. We should take the gloves all the way off, but this policy adjustment is a step in the right direction.

Of course we are only seeing the topside but besides the hole on top of the deck it doesn't look like it destroyed the ships, just damaged. Even damaging them is a big win, just wish they had something else that could destroy the bigger ships that don't have their own munitions on them where you get secondary explosions.
