A friend of mine lived in Russia a few years, married a Russian woman, lives in US now, checks in with family over there a lot.
What he was told:
1. Minor misunderstanding
2. Small part of Wagner is being disruptive
3. They are mercenaries, someone likely just paid them more money
I suspect that's the Russian media story that's being pushed. At least as of last night,

Actually, Putin has publicly said it's essentially a major coup by the Wagner leader and threatens the sovereignty and future of Russia. He hasn't downplayed it at all.
