Today's SITREP.

Does anyone have any good reading material that could shed light on the amount of various forces (infantry, tanks, air, etc) that would likely be allocated to various endeavors? I'm no expert, but I'm trying to learn more. Part of that is because I want to better evaluate claims when someone says they killed x amount of infantry and y amount of tanks, etc.

The Russian armed forces basic tactical unit is a battalion augmented with a few special units to make up a Battalion Tactical Group. Each BTG consists of 700-900 troops. Each BTG usually starts with an infantry or tank battalion supplemented by artillery, anti-aircraft, engineering and other units required for the mission. You can expect about ten tanks, 30 infantry fighting vehicles, and around 200 infantry.

Russia started by sending about 120 BTGs into Ukraine. About 40 of them have been rendered combat ineffective (destroyed) and withdrawn leaving about 80 BTGs in the battle. Russia maintains a reserve force of perhaps another 50 BTGs that could be deployed.

This is 30ish km directly south from Bakhmut.

With Russia itself being so close, one has to wonder the effect on Russian supply lines in the East. Quite a bit has gone up in flames and explosions there.
