That's a big flame for a SAM just hitting the ground. And if surface to surface - that's a damn close shot.

They think Russian laws will protect them?!
Point being, he's served 5 years, making him one of the few more experienced soldiers Russia has. Not easily replaceable.

Point being, he's not going home unless they let him go home. His contract end date doesn't matter.
From what I've seen it is entirely possible he may just lay down his rifle and start walking back home when his term is up, officially released or no.
Yeah, I took what he said to mean when his term was up he was planning to "peace out" of his unit and make his way home.

And I doubt any other soldiers are going to be willing to enforce making him stay after his contract is up. Not really in their best interest to set that precedent.

I'm also not sure he's safe at home. Being ordered to stay and then deserting sounds like a good way for you and maybe your family to end up gulag'd.

The idea that Russian "law" or "contracts" mean anything beyond what Putin says they mean is foolish.

Putin knows the Russians have a history of deposing and murdering their leadership, too. Better to let the conscripts and volunteers go per the law and their agreement than start shooting the officers. This is a very union versus management relationship, and the last thing he needs is a union member getting pissed and inciting the others or inciting them all himself. Probably why there was no war declaration or general mobilization.

This doesn't seem like it would be very effective at all when you compare to what the Ukrainians are using? It also looks like it's not even mounted when they actually launch the UAV. With it being such a light aircraft, would putting these on just one wing cause balance issues?

Those things can't hover so I am skeptical they can hit a target with any accuracy. Unless the bomb is quite large I would think it is practically useless to use in that way.

This sounds like the scale of that **** up took even the Russians by surprise. Also like the BTG commander may have been killed or suicided.

Visually confirmed losses are about an entire BTG's vehicles so losing just one battalion commander may be a low estimate

That's not good. What can the Ukes use to find and target subs?

Same thing they've been using thus far. Not a damn thing. Russians have been lobbing sub based missiles at them for a while.

Pretty much nothing. Subs aren't meant to be found.

Best chance to get those subs is when they're reloading missiles in port at Sevastopol. They need longer range missiles and timely targeting info to do that though

Ukes have no planes that can drop sonar buoys or torpedoes?

Well, it's most of their infantry, armor, and engineering/logistics vehicles. Their AA assets were probably in a rear area and escaped. I would venture that all of their company commanders and platoon leaders are dead too though. Probably looking at some majors and an LTC or full colonel. Not sure their entire command staff would be there, but maybe.

One of the biggest losses would be the bridging engineers and equipment. Those are fairly specialized units and killing a good number of them and tearing up their equipment will make a difference in how easily the orcs can attempt another crossing.

Anti submarine warfare is very complex and specialized. They don't have the capability and even if they did they'd need control of the air and sea surface to do it
