So, the Irish strategy would be to submit, in a circumstance where the attacking power currently says there are no real negotiations, only terms that must be met? The Russians don't stop until they realize the prize isn't worth the cost. Negotiations wouldn't change that.

Some lives might be saved, in the short run, at the cost of long term subjugation in the long run. Let the Ukrainians decide what they value.
I don't think it is the Irish strategy. They have a total of 13 MEPS. They just happen to have at least 2 idiots in that 13..

Good luck.

I read earlier in this thread that diplomatic assignments are sometimes used to get undesirable political figures out of Russia. I wonder if that's the case here, or if Russia is projecting confidence that normal diplomatic relations will resume very soon because they expect to win and that the world will move on, forget about the atrocities, and accept the new world order.

That is not the official Irish stance. Talk about someone who has absolutely no understanding of what brings peace.

Accent is cool though.

If we've learned anything the last 2 months, the corruption and ineptness of the Kremlin is higher than we ever expected.

I could see them doing that with diplomats that were connected, but unwanted at home. However, that just F's them in the long run if you don't have someone you trust posturing and negotiating foreign diplomacy on your behalf. If they were doing this through to fill spy spots at foreign embassies, then the FSB is borderline incompetent.

So, before the last couple of months, I'd say that's highly unlikely gossip. Today......who knows???

She's not wrong, more effort is being put into making the war go on and on, versus working to end it. No one is taking a lead on peace but there are plenty of leaders for war. Maybe there is no peaceful solution but no one is trying, unless there is something going on behind the scenes. If only we had a strong US leader in charge.

Until Putin negotiates an ending in good faith, no peaceful resolution is in sight that doesn't ultimately screw Ukraine.

Question: if Ukraine has been able to send missiles into Russia and strike some bases there, what's to stop them from giving similar treatment to Russian artillery? Are they avoiding the artillery largely on purpose? It seems like if they could hit them more, the Ukes would. Is the artillery too insignificant of a target to throw missiles at?

I recall far back in this thread that it is an unfortunate tradeoff that as long as the artillery isn't hitting military units, it's not as high of a priority. Thinking about the coming major Russian offensive, however, I question if the artillery is not rising in priority.

Oh I agree but is anyone trying to talk sense to him anymore? At one time Macron was trying to talk sense to Putin but that was before it went completely south on him. Surely by now Putin is looking for an off ramp, otherwise its just going to be hell for both countries. No one will ultimately win this thing at this point.

Moving versus stationary targets. To hit an airbase or fuel/all dump, you just need to know where it is, which isn't hard with Western surveillance satellites. To hit artillery, you have to find it and hit it before it moves, which is not impossible but also not bet easy. Much of it is made to shoot and scoot to make counter fire much more difficult.

She's an idiot. The ultimate rule of diplomacy is might makes right, and that is what Russia lives by. As long as they can get away with it, they'll talk all day while stabbing you in the back.

Take it for what its worth, but my wife still has family that live there. Ireland is very much Dublin vs. the rest of the country. Dublin is very, very liberal like most big cities and the rest of the counties are more conservative. Downside is damn near 2/5ths of the population live in Dublin

Yep there can't/won't be a peace until both sides want it. Russia isn't going to want peace until earliest the end of their upcoming offensive. A peace deal doesn't make sense right now, unless Ukraine decides to roll-over regarding the Donbas and Crimea.

If that IRA member really wants piece, she needs to start putting together a seance to restore Winston Churchill and release him with a big stick on Putin. Russians may speak Russian, but they only understand might and force.

ETA: Tweets are appearing untranslated. Per liveuamap, the updates are that India's PM is proposing to Moscow to hold Ru/Ukr talks, that they are sending medical aid to Ukr, and that the Indian PM told Biden that the situation in Ukraine is very worrying.

Yes, but the longer it drags on the more it becomes a fait acompli for what Putin desires to avoid-- looking weak. The fact he put himself in such a hard place is the biggest risk factor in all this mess. Someone should be trying to talk him into taking an off ramp, if it is even in the cards. If it is not, than the tragedy for both countries (and the world) just gets deeper.

In the 60 Minutes interview last night, Zelensky made a pretty unequivocal statement that Crimea belonged to Ukraine, and that was not open for negotiation.

How do you negotiate with Russia when they poison and try to kill your negotiators? (it seems like this is a contested fact, though)
