These atrocities were being committed from the very get-go of the invasion. They were not bad actors, nor deserters.

The atrocities were part of the battle plan.

" A Ukrainian drone unit used quad bikes and night cover to ambush Russian forces, The Guardian reported.
Aerorozvidka was first set up by tech-savvy, university-educated Ukrainians.
The elite unit, which flies up to 300 missions a day, is crucial to the Ukrainian campaign."

"Night ambushes carried out by a team of Ukrainian special forces and drone operators on quad bikes have helped turn the tide of the Russian invasion, The Guardian reported."

"Aerorozvidka is a specialist air-reconnaissance unit within the Ukrainian army, which has claimed to have destroyed dozens of Russian "priority targets," including tanks and command trucks."

"The unit's commander, Lt Col Yaroslav Honchar, told The Guardian about an ambush near the Ukrainian town of Ivankiv, which helped stop a 40-mile mechanized Russian column heading to attack the capital Kyiv."

"Equipped with night-vision goggles, sniper rifles, and remotely detonated mines and drones, the team of about 30 Ukrainian soldiers approached Russian forces by riding on quad bikes through forests under cover of night."

High mobility, hit and run attacks with forest cover during movement to contact and retrograde. Taking advantage of every Russian weakness.

Yeah. They've been doing that in the east since 2014, unfortunately. Continued to utilize those tactics once they began their advance this year.

Imagine those are pretty loud, I would imagine we are moving to electric on things like that to be more stealth.

Glad to see it's working as it is -

Plus it was freezing cold so some vehicles in the convoy would still be running, masking any noise from the Ukes' ATVs.

These a**holes know that Ukrainians value pets and this is nothing more than hell-level terrorism. From the same country whose organized crime syndicates kidnap and traffic women and children as sex slaves. There is no atrocity too low for them.

I guess their strategy towards Ukraine and how they want to be perceived has changed due to their own internal implosion.

I don't think many folks in the west quite understand the extent of the sense of self-importance that Russian leadership (political, religious, and elsewhere) and society at-large cultivates for the Russian nation.

It's not just a country with a blood thirst for empire, that's something that pops up all over the globe from time, but a country that's so utterly convinced itself it's the righteous, one and only liberator of the globe they can't fathom, for example, that Ukraine doesn't want them there.

I think it's easy to understand in broad strokes but the issue runs so very deep. This isn't ex post facto rationalizing by the clergy, it isn't just a conscious lie, it is a deep societal narcissism that's had a self esteem problem for the past 20 years.

I think this is so badass. Perhaps the way our own nation bled an oppressive empire dry by changing the game and fighting creatively. You send them home, licking their wounds by refusing to fight on their terms.

And IF Ukraine truly doesn't want them there, then it's because they're "Nazis" and therefore must be exterminated.

A differentiation that most westerners don't understand is that "Nazi" in Russian parlance isn't a strict reference to Hitler Naziism. In Russia, a "Nazi" is any enemy of Russia, Russian greatness, Russian interests, "the Russian people".

To Russia, we're all "Nazis" if we either don't collaborate, capitulate, defer, or at least look the other way.

Should also keep in mind that the Russian Orthodox Church was co-opted by the KGB several decades ago as a means to control narrative and populace.

Bishops and Partiarchs aren't installed without approval of the Russian government. The palace of the Patriarch is inside the same walls as the Kremlin.

There is also no evidence of stoploss. The Russian military is taking in 134,500 conscripts this month as part of a biannual draft & releasing those whose terms of service have expired. Since Moscow has not declared a war, it has no political basis for retaining conscripts. 9/

So how is the Russian leadership trying to square this circle? There are rumors that they're offering sizable payouts to those willing to sign a contract, including conscripts getting out of service, and those with prior military experience. 10/

There are also cases where conscripts are intimidated into switching to contract service - sometimes given the choice between months of difficult serving conditions and signing a contract. 11/
When semantics bite you in the butt. Can't call it a "war" can't use "wartime powers."

I have concerns based on domestic propaganda that he may very well declare war if eastern operations don't yield substantial and timely results.

I think that his repeated focus date of May 9 is the potential catalyst. If he can't declare a victory in the east by May 9 then I think there's a real possibility that he declares war on "the Nazis" on that day instead. If he does then the world has a decision on its hands.

Ukraine has chosen the risk of dying in its feet rather than living on its knees and were Russia to fully mobilize there's no telling what Putin would consider if he felt he had complete domestic complicity.
